Author VZW BroadbandAccess daily session pricing?
Paul

2007-07-16, 3:33 pm

I just got a new EVDO Rev A cabable USB720 adapter to replace my V640
ExpressCard. On the box it says "Daily session pricing available - no
long-term contract required" Never heard of this - anyone know the pricing
on that?

On another note, it's nice to see VZW has set up a self-activation gateway
page and offers a 3-day free trial option. So in theory, one can just load
the software, plug in the hardware and never talk to a service rep or visit
a store.

This is from last year:

http://news.vzw.com/news/2006/03/pr2006-03-29.html

If the price is still the same it isn't too attractive.

Too bad you have to screw up your system with Verizon Crippleware before
you can use the aircards.

Why would anyone pay $60 or $70 a month for 5GB of webpages and email?
Seems rather stupid.

"UNLIMITED DATA PLANS AND FEATURES
Unlimited Data Plans and Features (such as NationalAccess,
BroadbandAccess, Push to Talk, and certain VZEmail services) may ONLY be
used with wireless devices for the following purposes: (i) Internet
browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to
corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like
customer relationship management, sales force, and field service
automation). The Unlimited Data Plans and Features MAY NOT be used for
any other purpose. Examples of prohibited uses include, without
limitation, the following: (i) continuous uploading, downloading or
streaming of audio or video programming or games; (ii) server devices or
host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera
posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine–to–machine
connections or peer–to–peer (P2P) file sharing; or (iii) as a substitute
or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. This means, by
way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet,
downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets
is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services
and/or redirecting television signals for viewing on laptops is
prohibited. A person engaged in prohibited uses, continuously for one
hour, could typically use 100 to 200 MBs, or, if engaged in prohibited
uses for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, could use more than 5 GBs in a
month.

For individual use only and not for resale. We reserve the right to
protect our network from harm, which may impact legitimate data flows. We
reserve the right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred, and
to deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone we believe is
using an Unlimited Data Plan or Feature in any manner prohibited above or
whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. Anyone using
more than 5 GB per line in a given month is presumed to be using the
service in a manner prohibited above, and we reserve the right to
immediately terminate the service of any such person without notice. We
also reserve the right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer
Agreement term

That sounds great. Are you currently under contract from your
ExpressCard device?

Larry,
If you travel on business all across the nation like I do, and stay in
hotels that charge routinely charge $8 - $15 per day for internet access,
the Verizon card is a great deal. It pays for itself with a few days of
hotel stays per month. My company actually *saves* money, and improves the
productivity of travelling employees. Hardly "stupid".

Next time have someone do it for you. I have installed aircards numerous
times without "crippling" anything.

I am sure a lot of us aren't interested in driving around looking for
someones open access point. It is a valuable business tool to be able to
open your notebook wherever you happen to be and have Internet
connectivity. It is an extra bonus knowing you aren't using a shared
WiFi network.

Until you find yourself somewhere along US 287, between Raton, NM and
Wichita Falls, TX... Where the worthless roaming partner won't even let
you make a 14.4k data call over their 2G CDMA plant (I forget which SID
this was, and it may have changed to some degree, its been a bit over a
year since I made the trip). I also refuse to check into a motel w/o
wifi. Its always easy enough to check the WiFi situation from the
parking lot.

Heaven forbid you leave a major road in New Mexico (sometimes staying on
a major road isn't enough) and expect to make a phone call. I regularly
found myself looking up a GSM tower (obvious when looking at the antenna
layout) while my phone had the good ol' "no service" marker while
attempting to use a CDMA system so far away theres no chance in hell my
measly 250 mW is going to get back, or hitting SprintPCS systems that
were no longer in my PRL (they sure as hell were when I signed my
contract), no matter how far under the noise floor Qualcomm claims their
technology can hear. Your $70/mo data plan will be extremely worthless
in places like this, and a few of the towns I found this to be the case
actually had Holiday Inn Express and Best Western hotels! If a town is
worthy of a couple $1M+ NRC motels, its worth a $75k NRC/$1.5k MRC tower
install.

I've decided what I need to do is get a carrier with native coverage
everywhere I normally find myself using the phone. Today, for me, this
would be Cingular. Unluckily theres no way to know if that will be the
case 2 years from now, and that seems to be the going rate for cellular
contracts these days.

My solution to this problem still is valid. We FORCE them ALL to use the
SAME, STANDARDIZED digital scheme, like Europe has, and FORCE them ALL to
share resources at no charge to the screwed customers INSIDE their
licensed band monopoly areas.....or else we'll find another licensee who
can comply. PRLs will NOT prevent roaming to any of OUR licensees.

It's really too bad the damned money-monger lawyers took the FCC away
from the RF engineers who brought you such great services as nationwide
TV, Radio and Telephone many years past before the rest of the planet had
them. The PUBLIC needs to retake control of the FCC to do its bidding,
not the bidding of CTIA, RIAA, MPAA, etc. It's OUR RF spectrum, goddamn
it, not theirs! The time of the "buildout excuse" for cellular has LONG
past.

Provide smooth coverage, get it from someone else or get the hell off our
spectrum! It's quite simple....

As any regular here knows, this has been covered, time and time again.
And, Larry knows it. The actual FACTS don't seem to get in Larry's way.
He just keeps spouting his complete (or shall I say 99%) bullshit.

NONE of my machines and the (many) ones in the company have ANY
"crippleware" on them. Once the drivers are installed - simply set up a
DUN. Easy and simple. Anyone with even entry level computer skills can do it.

Larry's contention in the past that VZW's software disables network connections
is again - FALSE. It's complete BS.

Larry is also fond of quoting VZW's like a parrot. Yes, I will agree they are somewhat restrictive
taken at FACE VALUE. But, anyone with a tiny fraction of a brain also knows it's only lawyer speak.
Simply legal weasel language, nothing more.

Use the damn aircard for whatever you want - just keep the downloads in check. Larry is
very fond of completely maxing out his connection - seems to think it is god given right to
pin up any connection 24/7 downloading who knows what. That Usenet is the Internet - all
else is a just nuisance or that the WWW is totally worthless.

For 95% of business and most personal use, these wireless cards are absolutely GREAT.
I personally couldn't conduct my business anywhere near as well as I do without one.

Take most of what Larry spews with a LARGE grain of salt. Keep in mind, all this is from someone
that insanely believes the Jews (or some Illuminati thugs) are behind 9/11, that the Jews control
everything and (I'd bet) the moon landings were on a sound stage, etc, etc, etc...

Larry is quite 'loony' pardon the pun.

In RF terms, in 2007, theres no 'free market'. You've got ISM spectrum
that nobody wants due to the quantity of grandfathered devices. Other
than that, "free market" doesn't exist.

Do some research before you call somebody a commie, Nazi.
