Author AC1 versus AC2

Twice in the past year I've been in areas that indicated that I was
paying for off-extended network roaming on AC1, but have never been
charged for these calls. Once was on Cingular AMPS out in the Everglades
(quite amusing that I could make calls and Cingular GSM customers had no
coverage at all). Once was in Southern Oregon.

I wonder if there is really any difference in AC1 and AC2 for extended
network coverage. I remember at the time they came out with AC2, they
were saying that it had more included off-Verizon extended coverage than
AC1.

I kept AC1 for two reasons. First, I go to areas with non-Verizon AMPS
coverage, and the Verizon maps often show no coverage at all under AC2,
but extra-cost AMPS coverage under AC1. Second, I still have 8:01 p.m.
off-peak, which was the norm in the western region for Verizon until
about four years ago.
