Author False 411 Calls

Hi all,
I recently got my VZW bill and found I have been charged for 21 calls
to directory assistance. I know for a fact I did not get 21 listings
from them and I doubt I dialed 411 that many times. Verizon has been
very rude about this and referred me to 411 for an answer.

I call 411 and after a number of calls I spoke with a supervisor who
says that he didn't have any record of me calling 411 that many times.
Anyway, I call Verizon back and speak to a supervisor and I was told
that 411 has no way of telling me when I called and that they don't
even know who is calling. She told me that the only reason the
supervisor told me he didn't have a record of me calling 21 times was
to get me off the phone.

On my bill, there are a number of calls where it shows I dialed
(411)000-0000, which is how it usually shows up. On other calls it
shows up as (555)555-5000 which I cannot figure out why it shows up
like that and I haven't heard any good explanation. I never dialed
that.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks you
JC

Not sure, but could it be that you dialed 411 for a legit call, stuck the
phone in your pocket, and then accidentally the send button kept getting
pressed over and over again calling the last number? I know, sounds
ridiculous, but I'm just guessing.

I viewed a log of the calls and there are only two of them that are
within a few minutes of each other. It's very frustrating. I am not
convinced I legitimately owe what I owe for those calls. If my phone
did indeed dial 411 21 times, I would happily pay as it was my fault.
But I still cannot figure out where these came from.

Just forget it and pay the stinking $26.25

Two suggestions:
1) be polite but unwavering at a busy Verizon corporate store (not an
independent reseller). They'll usually give in to you if you spend too
much time as you'll be holding up the line.

2) file an FCC incorrect billing complaint. They tend to respond to
these better.

The goal is to be more of a problem to them than the $26 it would cost
to waive the billing.

Are you sure that you did not leave your phone on your desk or in a location
at home where someone could have picked it up and dialed 411? The numbers
that you dial are logged by a computer system and therefore there is no
human involvement. I seriously doubt that they could be in error.

I always have my phone with me. But this would not be the first time
VZW billed me incorrectly. About a year ago I got a bill with $400 of
over usage. It turns out that they made a mistake with my account and
the system completely billed my account incorrectly. Regardless, I
still cannot figure out why some calls show as (555)555-5000 and the
411 records do not match what VZW says I used.

Maybe it's another example, like you had, of...DARE I SAY...a corporate
company making a mistake. NOOOOOOOOOOOO, a company like Verizon couldn't
possibly make a mistake, could they? Next time you call up, point out that
this isn't the first time you've been screwed. Excuse me, billed
incorrectly.

I hate to point out the obvious, but is it not possible to carry
around a phone book with you (in your car, maybe), so you don't have
to call 411 so much? There's no better defense to incorrect 411
billings than a proven track record of never using it.

I've had a very similar problem, with very similar results. I'm on a
"family plan" that is used for our small family business, and my dad's
phone has had numerous 411 calls charged to it over the past several
months (starting in February) to the tune of several hundred dollars of
411 charges and minutes overages. He has never, as in NOT ONCE called
411. Even going through the call log on the phone shows no 411 calls.
We were able to get a detailed call log from Verizon that showed
locations that calls came from, and they all have come from the same
part of town (we're from Sacramento, calls were made in Roseville about
20 miles away). Some calls happened at times we can prove the phone was
not in the location that the calls came from. Still this has gotten us
not very far with Verizon's customer service. Every time you call you
get a different person and a different story. The ads they show on TV
with everyone in the background is everyone you need to talk to before
you can get to someone with the authority and capacity to make an
actual decision. Through another forum, I was able to get a hold of
someone who was supposedly fairly high up in their billing / IT
department, and he has told me they were looking into it, and has
confirmed it was a Verizon problem, but nothing has been done to
resolve it. I am very convinced this same problem has happened to many
other people, and is more than likely worthy of a class action suit. If
you have had a similar experience please detail it here.
