question bout smart phone
|
|
| Nobody you want to meet.... 2007-08-19, 10:33 pm |
| I was wondering if anyone can suggest any kind of phones that I should get.
I'm that type of man, who regulary checks for email, likes to surf internet
time to time. I've thought about getting a smart phone, because i can
check my email anywhere I go, and stuff like that.
Right now, I have vx 8600 phone and may i add, a very good phone. Also, is
it possible to get a smart phone without getting data plan, since i can
connect through my wireless network at home and through wifi ?
Thanks for any information you may provide.

| Since you have the LG VX 8600 I presume you are with VZW.
Smartphones are great. You will need a data plan. the unlimited plan adds
$45/mo to your existing voice plan.
VZW doesn't really support WiFi. Although, you can buy a WiFi card for some
of thier devices (I have a Palm Treo 700wx and it accepts a WiFi card). You
can imagine why the carriers are not too hot on WiFi... it cuts into their
data business since you can use WiFi without paying data charges to VZW.
VZW requires a data plan on all of its smartphones. Even if you ony get the
"pay-as-you-go" plan, you gotta have a data plan. Pay-as-you-go is an easy
way to get burnt with unexpected data charges.

| You got some wrong info here. I have an XV8700 (HTC Apache, or Audiovox or
UTSTarcom--same phone). This has WiFi and works with Verizon (built-in
WiFi). It does the email and web surfing stuff, too. You do not have to get
a data plan, but if you do accidentally use VZ data you will pay A LOT. You
can use this phone for internet, email use just using WiFi. If you don't get
a data plan, VZ will charge extra for this phone. So....buy it on Ebay. I
did. You can activate it without data then with no penalty. Also, you don't
extend your VZ contract this way for a subsidized phone.

| I was not really addressing an eBay purchase. I was addressing a VZW
purchase. You need a data plan if you buy from VZW.
Also, VZW does not sell a XV8700 (at least in area code 80233). Perhaps you
meant the XV6700?
In any case, I do concede that you can do WiFi on a VZW phone, if it is
capable. But, if you purchase it from VZW, you'll have to purchase a data
plan. Even if it is only pay as you go. And... even if you then subsequently
tell VZW to "block all data" to be safe. You'll still have the data plan.
Period.
If you want to become a test pilot and purchase a phone on eBay, and then
see how minimally you can activate it on VZW, that's fine too. As long as
you realize that you are a test pilot. It may work and it may not.

Where are you located that you are using an XV8700?
So you purchased the phone on e-bay and activated it with VZ without
having a data plan? You activated on-line?
What do you mean: "if you do accidentally use VZ data you will pay A
LOT"
How does the 8700 compare to the UTStarcom 5800 & 6800 which are
scheduled to be released by VZ in the "near future"?
Thanks for clarifying these items.

Not in 98248 either! The 6700 is offered here. Supposedly the XV5800 &
6800 are coming to VZW.

Good point! Is it possible to get the id code of the phone and run it
by VZW to see if it can be activated?

I do believe you can do that. Although I never have.
