| I have my own Verizon phone, but I'm working on adding service for my
elderly parents. One of the free phone choices includes AMPS800 in addition
to CDMA800/1900. Where would the AMPS800 be useful? Would it increase
their chances of getting a connection in Canada or Mexico? (they travel a
bit...)

It is somewhat useful in Mexico. The operator with the best coverage
there (Telcel) often provides only TDMA/AMPS in very rural areas so an
AMPS phone is the only type of US phone which will have coverage. In the
US and Canada it is becoming increasingly rare to find places with
AMPS service but no CDMA service, though you might find the occasional
spot.
