Data and voice plan with smartphone

| I have been using Verizon with the 450 minute plan plus the Mobile Web
add on for $45/month. I am considering buying a smartphone or PDA but
I don't see a data/voice plan for under $80/month (450 minutes +
unlimited data access). Does Verizon offer any data/voice smartphone
or PDA plans that cost less than $80 per month? ( I don't need
unlimited data access.) If I purchase a PDA phone I would prefer a
phone that has WiFi capability. Does Verizon offer any phones that
support WiFi?

| 1) No cheaper unlimited plans. You can try the pay-as-you-go data plan, but
that'll prolly bite you in the XXX with overruns.
2) Yes, VZW does have a WiFi phone, the XV6700. However, their other
Smartphones are more popular. I have the Treo 700wx. You can buy an add-on
third party WiFi card for ~$35 or so for the Palm Treo.
Something to keep in mind with Smartphones. They are not just regular phones
with extra features. They are computers with a phone application. Some
often misunderstood functions listed below...
Smartsphones:
- Do not have Get-it-Now
- Do not have a "Mobile Web" option for $5/mo but use actual Internet web on
the data plan
- Can not use VZW's Backup Assistant
- Can not use VZW's Pix Place
- Can not use VZW's VZNavagator
- Can not use VZW's VCAST
- Can not use VZW's TV application
- Can not use BitPim (popular third party backup/restore program) but sync
program comes with 'em
- Must have a data plan of some sort (even if only pay-as-you-go by KB)
There's more, but this should be enough to make a believer out of you.
For all the VZW things that Smartphones cannot use, there are third party
(mostly pay, but some freebies) apps out there to do the same things. Just
like on a "computer", which it is.

700 minutes, Unlimited n/w, free LD, free M2M, all the toys - $39.95 +
tax
Unlimited EVDO data (No GB Limit)- $10/mo
Axcess Web on Openwave browser - $5.99/mo
44 Channels of MobiTV - $10/mo
Smartphone is an E815.
If I want to tether my laptop, they cancel the Unlimited EVDO data $10
and replace it with $25 unlimited tethering, including Axcess data. I
decided it wasn't worth it because there's so much free broadband around.

Larry,
I also have an E815 and it does not qualify as a smartphone. The Moto
E815 is a digital CDMA phone that can be used with mobile web to
access the web and it can be used for messaging as well as some other
applications.

I wish it had Java. That would make more weather sites light up on it

I just came from Ashley Marina, here, and someone on the dock asked if
anyone had seen the radar. I booted Axcess Web, which just happened to be
turned off on the NOAA color radar for this area. I clicked REFRESH to get
the new moving radar data. Too bad it doesn't work far offshore.....(c;

Verizon has very good coverage, 1X and EVDO. How does Alltel compare in that
regard?

Alltel is a regional carrier. I was once a customer of theirs. They were
the last of the 4 or 5 owners of the "B" side here prior to VZW. They
did a territory swap with VZW. When they were here they weren't very big
on spending money on infrastructure.

Alltel just got EVDO in SC. Now that it is out...Alltel has EVDO even in
the boonies! Take a Google Earth tour for Greeleyville, SC. I was
astonished to find the EV on my E815 top row while doing yearly service
on the '49 Hammond CV organ at Greeleyville United Methodist Church.
Seeing it, I tried Axcess TV's 44 channel lineup. Worked
perfect....probably because I was the ONLY USER in Greeleyville at the
time!
Verizon had the older version of EVDO running long before Alltel's new
version. I'm not sure how smooth their coverage across my area is on it.
I got a call from MobiTV on my cell today. I asked them why my Axcess
TV, Alltel's rebranded MobiTV product, balks every 15 seconds for just
the briefest moment in an email about 4 days ago. They tested my problem
on a Motorola E815 at their shop, in California I think it is. Their
E815 does the same thing as mine...it pauses 4 times a minute for just a
blink, regularly, on all channels. They discovered the video delivery
overruns the E815's ability to render it. The E815 runs out of data
because it is incapable of downloading to the buffer and rendering the TV
fast enough to keep up with the data usage with the pitiful available
memory in the E815.
I'm wanting a faster-processor phone with adequate memory to make it
happen, now.....(d^:) When I get time, I'm going to see how other Alltel
phones work at their store on Axcess TV before I buy one........

There are work arounds...I bought an unlocked verizon treo 650 on ebay
for 150.00 dollars. It cost me twenty dollars for verizon to activate
the phone. I then told verizon to disable all internet access on the
phone. You can get dial up internet service for about a penney a
minute from BamNet. You then buy 1000 minutes for 10.00 dollars.
The thing is, you are using dial up service, which is a little slower,
and the minutes you are on line count against your verizon minutes
plan of phone time.

A LITTLE slower? It's 14.4- about 1/2 to 1/3rd of dialup!
You could also save the $10 you're paying "BAMnet" by using
freedialup.org. As the name implies, they're free.
