If you need another phone and you paid for insurance, don't they give you a
refurbished phone, not a new phone? If that's the case, just skip paying
for insurance and buy a used phone from ebay.

When my muti-featured Free phone arrived with no belt clip or holder, I
figured I'd better get max insurance. I destroyed a number of Cingular
phones by dropping them. However, with Cingular I just swapped the
smartcard into a phone from eBay.

Since choosing insurance, I have recently found that there is an online way
to change service to another Verizon phone without any charge (ESN number?)
That opens the door to phones from eBay. However, many of the phones on
eBay do not have E911 built in, so Verizon won't allow those.

Hmmm. I think I may cancel my insurance.

I just cancelled my insurance. If the phone has an electronic failure
during the first year (not water damage) Verizon will still replace it for
free. If it dies in the 2nd year, it will cost $50 for a Verizon swap.
However, the best deal for the 2nd year, or a lost phone, is getting one on
eBay. I'm thinking I might want to buy a phone from eBay ahead of time, so
I can have an instant replacement on-hand. Waiting a week could be awkward.

Some of those eBay phones sell very cheap.

Until recently I was not a fan of insurance for phones (i have three of
them) but kept them insured anyway. My past experiences with the insurance
carrier were poor. However, that's changed recently.

My son has a habit of losing his phones regularly. While it's probably true
that most of the time you probably get a refurb, in his last two incidents
we could not tell the difference between the replacement and a new phone.
And they both worked flawlessly.

Now, here's the kicker for me. My son's last phone was a V325 which he lost
this past weekend. Apparently it's a discontinued model so they sent him a
new Krazr for the same $50! He's thrilled. I'm jealous.

And, despite what else is implied here, the turnaround time is only two
days, not a week or more. Imho, replacing your phone through eBay will cost
you more both in money and in hassle. And I'm an eBay fan. Go with the
insurance.

I had it for several years. Then one day, my phone got wet and died. I
called the insurance and had to pay a deductable of about $25, IIRC (it
was several years ago)and shipping for a new phone. It was an Audiovox
CDM9??? I got the phone for free from Verizon.

As I get my phones replaced for free under the new in two plan, I don't
require the fad-phone of the minute and I'd rather keep my money, I
can't see paying $60/year for insurance. YMMV, but my one experience was
enough to prove to me that I didn't need the insurance.

My last phone broke one month short of the new in two and Verizon just
shortened the date to contract renewal by a month so I got another free
phone. Even if it were to break next week, I'd do better with a cheap
replacement. JMHO

This is great.. I"m learning so much about my phone. My cell phone was in
second year, and it barely worked. the volume would drop several time, and
the phoen would turn off and on, and i had no insurance at that time. they
told me to buy a new phone.. which i did. 219 dollar :( that was six
months ago and mycontract is up next month. I'm not going to renew
mycontract for a quite while, so it'll give me an option to just explore
different alternative.

Actually there are three tiers of insurance $4, $5 and $6. I
understand that the $5 and $6 dollar plans give you a replacement
phone for $50 (once a year). But could someone explain the difference
between the $5 and $6 plan; VerizonWireless can't ?!

When I originally got lockline, the top tier, I was told there was no
deductible. Replacement was completely free for any reason, supposedly.

I think this is correct but, for whatever reason, my Verizon carrier (not a
Verizon-owned store) could not supply the totally free version. I'm not sure
why this is. I thought it was discontinued.

No, I cannot explain the difference between the $5 and $6 version.
