I don't get it, but each time I've activated a new phone on my family share,
I get charged $20 for activation, even though it CLEARLY states in the
online invoice that activation is free. The actual invoice shows a current
balance that's $20 more than all the charges totaled. They obviously don't
want to show a charge for activation, which would be easily picked up on.
When I call they cheerfully remove the charge and give me some story about
how the mistake was made. I find it troubling that this "mistake" is
routinely made, and can't help but wonder how many folks just don't pick up
on it.

Probably about the same number as purchase a Powerball ticket each week.

Thanks for sharing about this. I'm waiting for my 1st family plan itemized
bill to post on the website. The bill total($189.98) for 3 phones (2 new
phones) has posted and looks high. It would be nice to get some credits.

The online invoice will clearly show the charges. If all the charges total
less than the invoice total, call them for an explanation. They will
undoubtedly find that the extra, undocumented charges were for activation,
which is free with online purchases, and clearly states this. They will give
you some wacky explanation for how this happened, then credit you the errant
charges

I have a wild guess. The charge for transferring service on existing
service to the ESN of another phone (as from eBay) is $20, if you call in.
It is free, if you do it from the website. When I got the two phones from
Verizon I had to *phone in* to get my ESNs activated. I'm unclear if this
was supposed to have happened automatically, or if I could have used the
website to program the ESNs myself. (if they had sent instructions) My
order was complicated by the fact that the phone numbers assigned to the
phones were not the same as the paperwork showed.

The $20 charges might be from the programming of the ESNs. -Just my guess.
However, anything like that should be itemized.

They did it to me too.

I got my online bill and they charged $25 per phone for activation, even
though I ordered the family plan phones online. I called their customer
service and she gave me $50 credit.

Sadly, I'm pretty well convinced that this is standard procedure. They stand
to make millions from people that don't catch it. At the end of the
day,"It's the network"
