I purchased a data cable for my LGX8300 so that I can use Bitpim to
sync contacts on the phone. When I plug the cable and phone into the
USB slot, I get an error message that "One of the USB devices attached
to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize
it." I clicked on the balloon with the error message, and "Unknown
Device" was bolded. However, when I go into Device Manager, none of
the USB devices show any errors.

When I go into Bitpim and take a look at the settings, not
surprisingly, no ports are available. I did have a FutureDial Modem
driver in the list, however, that didn't seem to work, so I
uninstalled it and installed the modem driver from LG
(LGUSBModemDriver_En
g_WHQL_Ver_4.6.exe), but that didn't make much
difference. The readme file says:

Win2000/XP.
lgusbbus.inf - setup information file for usb bus
driver for Win2000/XP.

lgdriver.cat - Catlog File For Driver Kit for Win2000/XP

System is XP/SP2. I tried manually installing the driver for the
Unknown Device from the folder that contains the above files, but
nothing has worked.

I don't know if it's the cable or something else. I do know the cable
isn't totally nonfunctional, as it charges the phone.

Any advice? I'd like to get this to work, but should I stay away from
the cheap data cables on Ebay (which is where this one came from,
although a Google search seems to indicate that they work fine) and
just get an LG cable, or would a bluetooth dongle be a successful
(although more expensive) solution? I'd rather avoid the dongle if
necessary.

Don't know anything about these cables, but I use the following USB
bluetooth adapter with Bitpim and my VX8300. It works flawlessly:

Probably the wrong cable... I have tried 4 different ones (trying to save a
few bucks), all claiming they would work for the 8300 (but didn't), and
finally on the 5th one, direct from LG, got one that works..

I'd say just get the right cable from lg, rather than trying to save a few
bucks and get the wrong ones....Why do you want to (in your own words...
"I'd like to get this to work,"...) instead of just bite the bullet, spend a
few bucks and get one that absolutely works, rather than try to save a few
bucks by getting it from other sources? Of course if your time is worthless,
or your a masochist, then you can probably get another elcheapo one/dick
with it for a while/hope it works, and hey, you may actually get one that
works

What operating system does your computer use?
Have you used that computer with BitPIM and another phone before?

My family has three 8300s, and one of them won't fully work with BitPIM.

"A few bucks" means, in this case, $40 plus shipping. No, that won't likely
bankrupt anyone in this newsgroup, but it's about four times what a USB cable
ought to cost. LG gets away with it because of their non-standard interface,
but I can understand not wanting to encourage them if an alternative can be
found.

BTW, the cable listed on the LG Web site for the 8300 is claimed to be
compatible with many other LG phones, but not the 8350. Have they finally gone
to a more standard interface?

Thanks for the reply. Actually, I did get the cheap cable to work
after all. I just d/l the LG modem driver, and when XP kept asking
for a driver, I kept giving it the same one about 3 times, and then
finally it said the phone was installed. Transferred all my contacts,
photos, wallpapers, ringer, etc.

Saved myself $30. And also saved myself some time, in the time it
took me to do the d/l and install, I would have just gotten to the
Verizon store.

Are you able to charge the phone (from a computer) through the cheap USB
cable?

Good point. I bought a cheap $12 USB cable and it could not charge my
phone. It was to replace my second GoMadic cable. http://gomadic.com

The first cable was replaced after 8 months under warranty, the second
cable lasted a few months. Took them apart and appears to be a cold
solder joint on the ground lead in their "universal" adapter design.
I no longer recommend GoMadic to anyone.

Yes, the cable I got also charges the phone. It was more expensive
than the $5.00 cables, but it specifically said it charged and the $5
ones did not. The one I got was

XP SP2

No. I had used it with SnapSync and a Samsung before, but not with
the LG and bitpim. After installing the LG drivers a few times, XP
got the message and recognized the phone.

You mean the same cable and computer, and 1/3 of the 8300's doesn't
work? Sound likes a firmware upgrade is needed or the phone is
somehow defective.

When you say 8300s, do you mean they are all 8300 (83XX) models, or is one
of them the 8350 that verizon has now, and needs a different cable and
drivers?....

FWIW, I had an 8300 and now an 8350, and while one worked fully with bitpim
(actually have 2 8300's, one from verizon and the other was an alltell one I
got off ebay, not a verizon one (they only have 8350's now), the 8350 didn't
(different cable and drivers), however, all 3 phones take micro-sd cards, so
I just use that to transfer stuff (use the old 8300's as a camera for the
mutts, save the pix I take, and copy pix onto my network) was easier just to
get a micro sd card reader for my puter $9 for a 7 in one reader, and let it
work with any of the 3 phones memory cards, along with cards in
cameras/photo frames/etc ....
