20c/156 bytes = $0.1282/kbyte x 1,000,000 = $128,200/Gigabyte.
......and you're STILL buying it at that rate.
Are you crazy?!

Who's buying it? I'm not. I bought my phone to use as a phone, not to
send and receive text messages, browse the web, play music or games, or
view television! I very seldom use it even as a phone but, IF I need
it, I'll REALLY need it.

We signed up for text messaging when T-Mo was running a promotion a couple
years ago.
$10 per month for unlimited text/picture/instant messages.
$10 per month per account. Not per line. :)

There's a bunch of us.
My problem is that they're supposed to send a letter telling us of
changed in rates but I didn't get one. I mentioned it to them, all
they could say was, "We sent the letter to everyone" so maybe I'm
excluded from "everyone" because I've got text and picture messaging
blocked?

My plan is so old there was no such thing as text & picture messaging.
I still have the original phone that Verizon hopes will die some day
so they can cancel my contract.

My plan dates back to before Verizon and before picture phones but
since I've used the "New every two" feature to get newer phones the
text and picture messaging is part of my plan, I have to manually
disable it.
There don't seem to be many newer phones that are phone only and I'm
willing to have some of the features, I used the camera on my V3m this
morning to get some quick shots and I may someday need the Verizon
Navigator. The extra features don't bother me, I just don't use them.

That's getting old Larry. Yes, texting is overpriced, but you're paying
for the delivery, not the amount of data. If you need to send a GB of
data, you don't do it via SMS.
When postage went up to $0.41, did you tell everyone how much it would cost
to send a boxcar of coal first class?
Text pricing is ridiculous for the same reason "overage minutes" are- to
"scare" us into using text/larger minute buckets.
I've been using cellphones for almost two decades now, and could probably
count every text I've ever sent using my fingers and toes.

Well my cellphone is so old it has a handcrank to raise the operator, runs
on steam, and the box it came in is labeled "Wireless Infernal Machine..."
Oh, sorry, I thought this was a competition... ;-)

Just pointing out the ABSURDITY of the pricing for SMS. I don't think it's
irrelevant at all to expose it.
The delivery costs them nothing. Most of the data bandwidth goes unused,
especially at Verizon where noone is using it from the terrible
consequences of going over 5GB/month, especially now!
Overage at 50c/MB is $500/GB, which, when compared to SMS rates, makes data
overage rates on the SAME DAMNED SYSTEM, look like a REAL bargain at $500!
Isn't it amazing how anyone can sleep at night selling A data at
$128,200/Gigabyte when they're selling B data at $500/GB from the SAME
TOWERS over the SAME SYSTEM? I've lugged enough paging terminals around to
know what it costs to install a full paging system. It ain't NEAR that
expensive to send out a tiny text message, even without selling them
sellphone service! We used to sell them 5000 messages for $9.95/mo over a
50 mile range from here. Nine 500 watt UHF transmitters filled in the
holes quite nicely over the area, too...no dead spots...(c;
Ahh...POCSAG, you served us well.
Girly pagers were $10 used...I rebuilt thousands.

Just the FACTS Todd, just the facts!! :-)

| And - he was pointing out the "ABSURDITY" of your now
highly predictable (and quite lame BTW) argument.
It's like a $#@! broken record...!!

You'll probably get the letter the same time the rest of us do - TWO MONTHS
AFTER the new rate has gone into effect.
I also have texting shut-off except for the free ones (e.g. "Amber alerts").
