Pre-Paid phone on Contract account?
|

| My wife's VZ cell was stolen.
Insurance has a $50 deduct for a refurb if we want to go that route.
My sister has a VZ Marbl that she had as a pre-paid service for a
while and said she'd give it to me.
A Radio Shack guy said VZ should honor activating the former pre-paid
on the contract we already have. Of course, we can't go by that.
Anyon ehave experience with this?
I'm also seeing some VZ pre-paids in stores for about $19.99. We
don't need a Cadillac - we just want a simple phone.
I'm also wondering what the diff is between a VZ Marbl and anyone
else's "Marbl" (like Virgin's) which is a Kyocera manufactured item.
The specs for the Kyocera Marbl show it is CDMA so it should work on
the VZ neowork.
Anyone?
Thanks

My understanding is that a VZW prepaid phone can be activated on your
monthly plan after it's been used as a prepaid, for six months. This is how
they amortize the cost of the prepaid phones.

Well its true. to activate a package phone sold as prepay it needs to
be active as prepay for 6 months. But you can not activate a Virgin
phone on VZW. Even if it is the same physical phone. the ERI sofware
is different. You could probally be able to flash the firmware in it,
but that would be a lot more trouble then its worth.

Actually its very easy to flash the firmware of most phones, and usually
falls to the simple matter of aquiring the correct cables. Its simple
enough that my mother could probably do it. Back before Verizon instituted
the six month rule, I flashed several pre-paid phones and used them on
standard post-paid accounts, and did a pile more for friends.
But even with flashed firmware, Verizon will know its a pre-paid phone
simply from the ESN. And now they have that six month rule. So yeah, its
not so much a bargain to buy that pre-paid phone any more.

AH! That is why I asked. I don't think it has 6 months on it.
The Radio Shack sales person didn't have the whole story.
Well, the existing contract ends in December I think so I need to
weigh whether to pay the $50 or not for that short time. I don't know
for sure if my wife will keep it after the contract runs out - lots of
issues with support and billing.
One other opssibility I am looking at is a used unit another friend
has but when I stopped at Radio Shack to see if they had a charger the
salesperson said the battery had water damage.
The person showed me a small pink panel at the end of the battery and
said that was the flag for water damage and that it might be chancey
to try to charge it.
The phone itself does not show any signs of water damage however.
So is a pink panel a sign of water damage on the battery?

Either that or it's pregnant.

If it was blue, I'd think the battery was a boy.
