To alt.cellular.verizon --

As I wrote to this group on 10/16/07, my 5-year-old Kyocera KWC-2325
would only work in ANALOG mode at one place I often visit. So now,
since analog is gone, I need a new phone. We have a Verizon plan, but
before I subject myself to their sales people, I'd like to ask if
anyone knows a way I could get a new, preferably "candy-bar" shaped
phone that does the basic things well, including a display (black-and-
white?) that's EASY TO READ IN BRIGHT DAYLIGHT. I don't need a
camera, GPS, music, or any of those bells & whistles. Should I try to
buy an "unlocked" phone elsewhere, and take it to the Verizon dealer?
Thanks! --Tom

First, check to make sure that service is not still available at that
location! Just because the companies are allowed to turn off analog
service does not mean that all have done so at all locations. Some
places there IS no other service. I imagine that digital service will
completely replace analog eventually but I doubt that it has happened yet.

I prefer a "flip" phone to a "candy bar" so I'm not familiar with the
available candy bar models. Check out what's available at VZW and
elsewhere, then buy the phone of your choice anywhere but VZW. If you
buy a subsidized phone from VZW you'll be saddled with a contract that
you probably would rather do without! At the very least, do your
homework and see which route will cost you less.

Since the 2325 also uses CDMA in the cellular and PCS bands, how would
getting a new phone give you service at this location?

Verizon will not activate a phone that doesn't have GPS.

Or you can activate it online or on the phone.

Myself and my whole family are on a Verizon plan. All of the phones
belonging to the rest of my family (all newer than my 5-yo phone) work
just fine at this location. As I wrote in that other thread, this is
the ONLY place I have this problem with my 2325 ... and VZW is unable
to resolve it for me. --Tom

Is that Verizon's own rule, or is it because of some law?

That statement is false... Analog is *NOT* gone everywhere, it's just no
longer mandated, and may still work fine in that one place.. For instance,
go to alaska, most of that state is still analog and thy have no plans to
kill it.....

It's their rule because of a law.

Well, the analog service is indeed gone at the place I'm talking
about : technically Forest Hills, Queens, New York City ... but since
it's right by Union Turnpike, one might also call it "Kew Gardens". I
tried the analog there yesterday, and it was as dead as a door-nail.

Little bit of both. FCC new rule sez something like 95% or so of a carrier's
phones have to be able to ident where 911 call is coming from-- and VZW's
response is not to activate any more non-GPS phones.

It would seem that your particular phone is the issue, not all 2325s.
I think I would just look on eBay for another 2325. I just reactived
my old VZW 2325 for my daughter on Alltel and it gets coverage just as
good as the phones it replaced.

Check if the phone is set to "Analog only". On my 2235 (not 2325), I
think it's under Settings, Network, Digital/Analog.

Also download a new PRL so your phone knows where to look for digital
signals. Dial *228 from your home area and select option 2. Wait for
the process to complete.
