Data Plan Requirement..??

| I have had a verizon Treo 650 for about 2 years and wanted to upgrade to a
new Treo 755p since my contract is up and I get the $100 discount. When
selecting it said I had to get a data plan. I don't have one now and don't
need/want one. So, whatzup with that? Is there a backdoor way around this
stupid money grab??

From prior posts here, some have said you have to sign up for the plan to
check out on the website, then you can call and have the p
an switched to the pay-per-use data plan ($x/MB) then disable the data
connection on the phone so it won't/can't connect.
This would be a good time to get the straight answer from VZW itself,
however...

Ebooks
Calender
Task List
Voice Recorder
Database
yada..yada.
My only issue with the 650 is 32 MB of RAM and every time I try to install
something, I have to remove something else. The 755 has 60 MB of useable
RAM.

John, check out the Nokia N800 for $239, no contract, no sellphone
hobbling. Mine has 32GB of storage for its long list of freeware the Linux
hackers have written for it.
All your Palm software will run on it under the Garnet Virtual Machine Palm
OS that's also free for it.
You're in for a treat with a real 800 pixel wide screen that will show full
webpages and ebooks. The ebook application for it works really nice, much
nicer than a Palm app to the tiny screen.
At least consider it before going through all this Verizon nonsense just to
get a few more MB of ram. Hell, if you don't put ANY SDCH memory cards
into it, you get 128MB of ram and it comes with a 512KB SD card for free.
16GB of SDHC is $59 at Newegg and the tablet has two, one inside a little
door for easy external memory access so you can swap the card with your PC
to eliminate the mobile downloading/sync problem.
The N800 will connect to Bluetooth DUN to Sellphone data or to any wifi
that's free or you have a password for. It can connect and USE wifi
hotspots my Gateway laptop doesn't even FIND!

I just called them. Get the $10 pay as you go thing, call next day and
they will take it off....so they say anyway....

Larry,
I looked into this device but I really don't quite get it. Is this a cell
phone? If so, what carrier can you use it with? I am really hesitant to
grab something for that much $$ and not get the chance to "play" with it.
I am in San Diego and if you know anyplace to actually talk to someone
and look at this thing, let me know.

No, it is not a cellphone, but it may USE a cellphone as internet access
over Bluetooth. Mine uses Bluetooth DUN to access my MotoROKR Z6m on
Alltel, who charges $25/mo for unlimited EVDO across SC. It's other
connection, and you may choose to favor either, is via wifi where it has
a really hot wifi receiver.
It's telephone applications are VoIP, notably as a Skype phone either
over the cellphone link or the wifi link, it doesn't care which. I buy
Skype Pro ($US36/yr in the USA for virtually unlimited outbound calling
or cheap overseas calls). For incoming calls I buy, for $24/each with a
Skype Pro user discount, two POTS numbers, one at home and one in
London, England. You may have up to 9 incoming phone numbers in many
countries. My only beef with Skype on it is it doesn't support the
N800's webcam, yet.
It also supports GoogleTalk, Yahoo's and many other internet audio chat
functions which DO support the webcam that pops out the left side of it
and rotates.
It doesn't matter what carrier you use it with because it doesn't run
any carrier's software. it's a GUI operated Debian Linux device that's
easier to use than mobile Windows. The freeware is all from:
http://www.maemo.org/ as is all the news and neat stuff the Linux
geniuses are working hard to put on it.
Enter N800 into Youtube and you'll be able to get a great idea how many
apps work on this tablet. There are lots of howto videos about its many
apps from the dedicated user community, some very nicely done. User
Thoughtfix is a great source to look for.
I'm sure there's got to be local dealers in a place as big as San Diego
where you can play with it. I found this list of San Diego dealers on

Buy.com shows them at $228, tonight. I paid $30 less by letting them
give me a credit card to charge it to....$198. Chase Bank decided I

OK, got it now. I really don't think I need an N800. I just want a
multipurpose cell phone and I think I am gonna try a BB Pearl and see if
I like it. If not, I will return it and pickup a 755P

Just a quick update:
Did NOT like the blackberry for a number of reasons. Probably since I
have been a Palm user since the P-III and it is way to differant for me
to get use to. Got the Treo 755p and am happy with the decision so far.
At least I know how to operate it and all my 650 software and preferals
work as well.
