so VZ cant block private calleres . . .

I don't think any provider can or will block private callers but you
can. You don't say what phone you have but on my V3m I can go to
"Settings", "Security", "Restrict Calls", "Incoming Calls" and select
"Contacts".

Should all cell phones be able to do this? I have an LG (provider -
Verizon) and tried to find a path to security settings and turning off
or restricting calls - tried a few possibilities, but they all lead to a
dead end (e.g., 'phone settings' -> 'security' -> ['lock mode', 'edit
code', 'reset default'] - nothing about restricting calls).
Haven't checked the manual yet - I suppose I should dig it up.

If it doesn't help, you can call Verizon and ask them. Be SURE to call
on a land line as you'll want to be able to have your phone free to
push buttons! ;-)
One more thing, I don't know about LG but the manual on my phone
doesn't say anything about how to do this, I had to figure it out by
myself. I could add that the manual doesn't say anything very useful
other than how to turn on the phone and make a call. It's pretty
useless.
One other thought, try www.howardforums.com and see if the LG section
or the Verizon LG section is any help. You'll need to log in to ask a
question but all they ask is a user name and email address.

Is my v3m different from yours? (mine is stock VZ).
I can't find the submenus you mention. I have "Settings and Tools",
submenus 1/Tools 2/Sound Settings 3/Airplane Mode 4/Display 5/ System 6/Call
Settings 7/Initial Setup 8/Connections.
No "Security" menu anywhere I can find.
Your post is a good call, I'd really like to try it, just afraid a Dr's
office or an emergency call might come in from somewhere not in my address
book.
By the way, what happens to the calls that don't go through? Straight to VM,
or they don't get through at all?

Thanks a lot for the info. I did a couple searches on
www.howardforums.com - It looks like there is some good info. there.
But after exploring the my phone's settings/options some more, it looks
like it's not able to restrict calls nor is it able to assign a silent
ringtone to a particular number. It might be time for a new phone
and/or provider.

Yes, I'm running the stock Motorola flash to get rid of the Verizon UI
but the menus, although laid out a bit differently, should have the
same settings.

It goes to straight to Voice Mail as you suspected. I just deleted my
landline number from my contacts, called my cell and got the "Your call
has been forwarded,,, etc. etc."
