My NE2 is available, and I was wondering, what people thought was the best
non-pda phone out there (from VZW of course)?

I live in the Northeast area, Boston, Mass, and I know there are various
aspects to consider such as camera, texting, voice dial, and reception, but
I'm just curious what you guys consider the best phone in general (I do some
text and pic messaging and I do require a speakerphone and voice dial).

I was disappointed to learn that I could only get a $50 discount off the
MOTORAZR˛ V9m (plus $50 rebate) which means I still have to pay $200.

Plus I have to buy a new car charger since the one I use for my E815 (which
is on the fritz) isn't compatible (I also usually buy two chargers one for
home and one for the office).

I'm completely sold on the MOTO V9m but have heard good thing about it, and
I tend to like Motorola products.

Anyway, appreciate your thoughts and insights.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I meant to write that I'm "not" completely sold on the MOTO V9m....

I'm using a MotoROKR Z6m on Alltel. Verizon has the same phone as Z6tv,
all hobbled up to sell you Vcast with most useful features the phone
comes with disabled. It's a slidephone and the keypad slides open under
the nice color screen. Talk time is 220 minutes and standby time is
days.

When I press the center button on the front, I get a full screen of
Motorola main menu on mine to do all the neat stuff the phone was made
for. When I pressed the same button on Verizon's I got a kind of box
office trying to sell me Vcast and couldn't find the buried menus.
Sorry.

Maybe you could reflash it with the Alltel firmware and restore its
functions. The camera takes photos to internal or the external 2GB
microSD in the top for transfer to your computer. You can move files
between phone memory and card easily. If you hold down one of the
buttons, it puts the Z6m in external drive mode. When in this mode, you
simply plug any micro USB camera cable into the Z6m and Windows
recognizes it as an external hard drive with 2 drives in it...the
internal memory and the card that's installed in the top. You can
DIRECTLY copy files to and from the phone's memory locations in this
mode from any computer that will recognize standard USB hard drives.
You don't need Motorola Phone Tools to do it.

The phone also responds well to Bluetooth OBEX from my Nokia N800 Linux
tablet. The N800 file manager can connect to the two phone
memories/card and move files over Bluetooth in and out between them.
Bluetooth DUN, OBEX, OPP, HID, A2DP and handsfree are all supported.
Z6m is my Linux tablet's secondary internet modem, and it works very
well on Alltel EVDO, as it should on Verizon's if you want to tether.
It will also tether to my Laptop with a simple camera USB cable, the
same one described above, but in the default mode as a data modem. I
don't carry the laptop much any more after getting the tablet.

The z6 MotorROKR phones are really great little phones.....BUT, the one
GLARING defect is its INABILITY to connect to more than ONE Bluetooth
device at a time! That's really stupid. I use the phone with a
Motorola S9 handsfree/A2DP headset. Before you tether the Linux tablet
to the phone via BT, you MUST disconnect the phone from the headset,
first, or it will ignore the call to DUN. If it's paired with the
tablet DUN, it will ignore the headphone. ONE Bluetooth connection at a
time, ONLY. It DOES support more than one protocol from the ONE device
it will pair with. I can have it on the internet over DUN and file
manager in the tablet can be accessing/transferring files, for instance,
simultaneously...but on only one device, one BT transceiver.

V9m was my 2nd choice. I think lighting up TWO screens in the flipphone
isn't a great use of battery resources. The Z6m only has one screen
because it slides. It must draw less power with only one screen.

"This device supports Bluetooth A2DP, AVRCP, DUN-GW, FTP-Server, GAP,
GAVDP, Headset-AG, HFP (1.5) AG, OPP-Client, OPP-Server profiles. "
V9m supports all the same BT protocols as Z6m, too, at a much higher
price because of the touch screen. Z6m uses buttons to do it, which I
fell are less susceptable to shirt-pocket-clicking than a touch screen.

http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/pr...balObjectId=202

Verizon's website says it has these profiles turned on:
Bluetooth®

"* Profiles Supported: Headset, Hands–free, Serial Port, Dial–Up
Networking, Bluetooth Stereo Support for Listening to Music, Object Push
& File Transfer for device generated images, video & vCard. (Phone does
not support all Bluetooth OBEX profiles)"
As you can see many of them are missing.....

Here's an important consideration between Z6m and V9m:
"The MOTORAZR V9m does not support a 2.5mm headset jack."

The Z6m has a regular mini stereo phone jack that will power any
headphones, LOUD! Even my Sennheiser DJ phones work directly with it.
This is nice, too, because the internal speakers are crap to listen to
music on. So, I plug in a nice set of POWERED PC speakers or plug the
Z6m into the big stereo beast with my MP3 player cord....and it sounds
really great! If V9 has some queer Motorola plug on it, like all my
previous Motorola phones....NO THANK YOU!

Z6m and the S9 stereo headphones both recharge from mini USB power,
either from their own chargers, giving you TWO chargers for either, the
car cord....or even your computer or laptop! No queer Motorola plugs on
Z6...a real feature.

You decide...(c;

I'd be tempted to get the Z6c "World Edition" with both the CDMA and GSM
built into it, even if you're not going to Switzerland skiing or a nude
beach in the French Riviera. Sure would make churning less painful if you
get fed up with VZW...(c;

Does it run on American CDMA *and* American GSM frequencies? Most worldphones
that do both run on American CDMA and *European* GSM.

So what good would it be on an American GSM network? I doubt it has firmware
that will let it run on American GSM frequencies...

It's CDMA 850/1900 GSM 900/1800.

The issue I have is that it's almost certainly locked, so you can't use
a prepaid SIM card when traveling to GSM countries, so you'll be doing
international roaming at around $1.29 per minute.

For now I'll stick with a separate handset for travel to GSM countries.
I was just in Taiwan, which like most Asian countries now has both GSM
and CDMA networks. I could roam for $1.29 a minute on my Verizon phone,
or use my old GSM handset with a prepaid SIM card for around
$0.25/minute. Actually there was one advantage to the CDMA phone, in
that the GSM network was very busy at the trade show I went to, and it
was difficult to place or receive calls, but the CDMA network had no
capacity issues. The third option, which people were resorting to, was
to use, OMG, pay phones!

What you can do while traveling is to create an account on
myglobaltalk.com, and before you leave the U.S. forward your Verizon
cell phone to your myglobaltalk number. Then whenever you have a
different number from a prepaid SIM card, forward the myglobaltalk
number to your prepaid number.

What kind of wifi did the tradeshow have available? Just curious if we
could have talked on Skype for free back home or to the office.....(c;

If wifi was available, we could have had TV to the office with Skype!

I just went from an E815 to a V9M. Here is the comparison:

The v9m is way cool. Very thin and solid feeling. It can transfer files
to my Mac (and back) by Bluetooth which the E815 could not. Voice
dialing works well. Battery life sucks. It must be charged every night.
You can get an extended battery for 50 bucks but it would make the phone
thicker.

All in all I like it a lot. Yes, I had to trash a bunch of chargers and
buy another car adapter.

It cannot be hacked for free WAP but you can use it for BT DUN, like the
E815. The camera is better. Lots of features are improved but no vibe
then ring. It will vibe AND ring though.

Thanks for the information. I think the V9m is pretty cool too, but battery
life is becoming more important to me; even with my E815 i wasn't thrilled
with the battery. i may end up with the V9m or search for a cool phone with
good battery performance too.

I have the extended battery on my V9M and it actually makes it easier for me
to hold the phone. With the battery it's still thinner than the origonal
V3M Razr.

You could have used a mini-USB to USB converter and saved all those
chargers. T-Mobile has them. I think they're around $5-10.

You can hack the V9M for free MOU WAP, as long as you are not on the new
Nationwide plan VZW just introduced. The new plan charges for all data by
the MB,

Now a days few well-featured phones come with a decent life battery. I had
to buy the extended versions for my e815, my V3M, and now my V9M.

how much did u pay for the V9M?

i think the phone is kind of long and wide at least more so than my E815.

when i hold open a V9M I feel like I'm holding a cordless phone.

i'm at a loss as to which phone to switch to with my NE2, each phone i
research has people griping about something and mostly it's battery life.

i hear lots of good things about the LG 8350 but i don't like the aesthetics
of the phone.

i was psyched to get the V710 and i loved the E815 but now nothing really
speaks to me.

help!

ps - i hear LG's are going on sale Sunday!

There's a cell phone comparison chart around somewhere. I stumbled over
it the other day. It tells me that my RAZR V3m should be good for 13
days at "idle" or for a little over three hours of talk time. I haven't
tested this myself. I suppose I could just not put on charge for a few
days and see. I very seldom talk on the phone; I bought it so I will be
ABLE to call someone if I need to. I doubt if I actually use three
hours of talk time in a year!
