| With TDMA, there is data for each phone that must be in the carrier's
system. This information is sent from Motorola to Nextel or SL. Without
that info in their system, the phone won't work.

True, but this isn't TDMA, it's iDEN. iDEN uses SIM-cards in the more
modern phones, and as long as you get the carrier lock removed, you can
use phones from different providers by swapping SIM cards.

| iDen is the name. It is a TDMA network.

Correct. However, TDMA only covers the way the available bandwidth is
used, it does not restrict how the carrier identifies phones or
subscribers.
GSM is TDMA too, yet you don't need to register your phone with the
carrier, only the SIM. You can drop a GSM SIM into any unlocked GSM
phone and access any GSM network (assuming frequency compatibility)
iDEN is no different then GSM in this respect, the carrier doesn't need
to know anything about the phone, not even the IMEI, all that need is
the SIM card number.
Note that the above assumes a SIM capable phone, iDEN has SIM and
non-SIM phones, if your phone doesn't accept a SIM card at all then none
of the above applies.

Southern Linc refuses to allow Nextel roaming.

Having a SIM card does not always guarantee portability of the handset.
For one thing, each iDEN carrier programs their handsets with a band
map. This is the equivalent of a preferred roaming list (PRL) in CDMA,
and while I'm not sure what it's called in the GSM universe (ENS?), I
know there's something similar there.
At any rate, bringing a handset with the wrong bandmap can delay or
event prevent the handset's acquiring the "new" home network. And so
far, none of the iDEN carriers seem willing to flash other carriers'
handsets to work on their networks.

you can use a nextel phone on southernLINC and vice versa. You just
gotta unlock the phone with either raptor, RSS Super Depot, or if it's
ROM 13 or ROM D, as of right now u will have to pay Moose to unlock it.
After it's unlocked, you write the csd in carrier and viola! you are
talking on another iDEN network. This applies to telus and boost also.
Hope this helps. That knowledge took me alot longer to find than
explain. Actually is very simple. Anything is possible. "Seek and Ye
Shall Find"...eventually!!! lol... :D
