| I do have a vague idea of what a cellphone is. However, I have no idea of
what a 'moran' is.
oh and by the way... do you know what a moron is?
there are many types but one type of moron is those newsgroups posters who
insist on using the wrong date and "will only fix the date on their
computer when they feel like it".
And I still request reimbursement for the unlocking fee you charged me and
the cost of replacement of my phone that your damaged.

| Actually it is possible to break a cellphone by unlocking it if the person
doesn't know what he/she is doing or there is a power problem during the
flashing/unlocking of the phone. If your phone's battery somehow loses power
or becomes accidentally dislodged during the flashing/unlocking process
(depending on how it is done), you basically get a very expensive
paperweight. It is the slightly the same idea as flashing/updating the BIOS
on computers. If anything happens during the flashing/updating process, your
motherboard is basically toast. I once damaged someone's phone by trying to
unlock it. The guy's battery was loose (it was held to his phone by tape)
and during the flash/unlocking process, the phone somehow lost power and his
phone wouldn't even power on.

| By the way, I'm not implying that you don't know what you're doing. I'm just
stating that there is always a chance of something going wrong even if the
chances are very small. The only real safe way of unlocking a phone is to
unlock it is by keying in a code onto the phone itself which you can get
from certain cellphone service providers and this code is dependant on the
IMEI number of the phone so it is a unique number. The number that someone
gets for his phone to key in will be different from the number that you get
even if you have the same type of phone because IMEI numbers are different
for all phones. I generally unlock certain phones for free but I offer no
guarentee whatsoever so I'm wondering what you mean by "guaranteed service".
Yes, I've damaged 1 phone in my unlocking process (I've done about 25
phones) but that person was aware of the risk and there was a power issue
with his phone.

| GUARANTEED means I will not kill the phone and I will make sure it is
unlocked and that I KNOW FOR SURE what i'm doing. if i say i can unlock a
phone it's because I have tested it already and i know it works. you've
done 25 phones, I'VE done hundreds and never killed one phone. There are
different safe ways to unlock a phone without keying in codes, and there are
ways to revive DEAD phones even if something goes wrong! You just need to
know what you're doing before messing around with phones and trying to
unlock or flash them.... I have fixed damaged software on NOKIA MOTOROLA
and Sonyericsson so it is impossible to completely kill the phone and turn
it into a paperweight unless u do this on purpose or u actually break
internal parts or you don't have enough knowledge to unlock or flash
different phones !

computer clock properly.
Do yourself a favor: avoid this arrogant clown.
he has caused more damage to phones than he is willing to admit.

| Actually, I didn't intentionally break the person's phone and I do know what
I'm doing with the phones that I normally unlock for FREE. In the middle of
the flashing that I was doing, the battery became dislodged. It wasn't
firmly in place to begin with and the person had held the battery to the
phone using tape. I'm not saying that you don't know what you're doing if
you read my posting. I'm just saying that it is possible to damage the phone
and turn it into a paperweight if something wrong happens at an inopertune
moment. I've done a few phones of the same type as the one that was damaged
and never had any problems using the software and the cable so I do know how
to unlock that type of phone. You have to look at the phone like a type of
computer. The phone is "programmed" to do certain things when it is powered
on just like your computer is programmed via the BIOS to do certain things.
If in the middle of the flashing of a phone or a computer, something goes
wrong at the wrong time, you can turn a phone into a paperweight. I never
said that you did this. The time that it happened to me, the phone wasn't
even "smart" enough to know how to turn itself back on since the flashing
got interrupted when the battery fell out. It is very difficult to revive a
dead phone when it doesn't even understand how to power up when you push the
power button. Placing a new battery into the phone didn't help and plugging
the phone to the AC outlet didn't help either. There is no way to fix the
problem that I encountered without opening up the phone (and possibly
replacing parts) since as I mentioned the phone wasn't even "smart" enough
to power on. If it can't power on and the problem is not with the battery or
the AC adaptor, there is no way to put clean/un-corrupted firmware onto the
phone.

| It was an old Ericsson (before it became Sony-Ericsson) T28w. I did a lot of
them without any problems using the exact same software and the exact same
cable. The one that turned into a paperweight wasn't done on purpose. Like a
mentioned, the person's battery was being held to the phone using some sort
of adhesive tape. While I was flashing it with the hacked unlocked firmware
for T28w (that I've used before without any problems on the same type of
phone), the battery became dislodged slightly. The result was the phone was
no longer smart enough to power on. Since it couldn't power on with the
battery, another battery, and the AC adaptor (and combinations of these
things), there was no way to put any firmware into the phone. It is similar
to trying to load software on a computer where the computer does not power
on anymore. To my knowledge, there is no way using only software to fix this
type of problem since loading software/firmware/etc requires that the device
at least powers up. I'm just stating that even if the person knows what
he/she is doing when he/she unlocks phones, it is possible that the phone
becomes a paperweight if something goes wrong. This normally happens if the
phone is not in 100% working condition to begin with (like in my case). In
another example, a co-worker asked me to unlock his Treo 600. I unlocked my
Treo 600 without any problems using hacked unlocked firmware that I found on
the web and he wanted me to do this for him. I took a look at his Treo 600
and while I was doing some simple tests before doing a hard reset, his Treo
600 rebooted itself. I then did a hard reset (no other programs installed on
it) and the Treo 600 rebooted itself again without any user intervention. I
refused to touch his Treo 600 because even though I can unlock Treo 600's
(I've done about 3), the Treo 600 is a mini computer and like updating
computer BIOS's if there is any power issue (rebooting, etc.) in the middle
of doing something like placing firmware or updating BIOS on computers or
PDAs, your PDA/computer might not be "smart" enough to turn itself on. This
is a well known fact. If you don't believe me that this type of thing is
dangerous, try updating your firmware/BIOS on your computer's motherboard.
In the middle of the update, pull the computer's power plug and see what
happens when you power up your computer again. Before I do any phone that
I'm familiar with (only Ericsson, Sony-Ericsson, some earlier Nokias and
Treo 600/650), I always mention that there are risks even if the risks are
very low. I also mention that since I'm not in the business of doing this
type of thing (I do it for friends, co-workers, and family) and I'm not
charging them anything, if anything goes wrong, I'm not responsible for it
and there are no guarantees (i.e. I won't replace or pay for their
phone/PDA). They are free to make their own choice.

Weren't those the charcoal flips?
Almost everybody that had one had battery problems (phone would loose power
whenever it feeled like it :)
I love my old clunker (I call it my little tank)
It's a standard Nokia 3390. No features, no fuss, so less that can (and
will) go wrong :)

to fix it) - By the way I didn't mean to say that you don't know what
you're doing I'm just saying that maybe you don't have proper equipment and
software to fix phones!
With phones it's different, there is something called service mode or test
mode or flash mode ... I've done the T28 before by reading it's unlock codes
(from the phone itself) and then entering them into the phone. I have
flashed the siemens A56 with wrong software on purpose once and then fixed
it back! I have flashed many sonyericssons half way and then unplugged the
cable... of course the phone will not start but the battery is always giving
it power and it is possible using "proper" equipment and software (that I
actually bought for money) to flash it back and make it work! I've done
the same with motorola and nokia! I have even changed IMEI numbers on
certain phones... The only problem I have with what you said is being SO
SURE that the phone will become a paperwight if something wrong happens and
we'll have to trash it because that's not true (trust me).

| The way I do T28w is to use a software that I found on the web and a special
cable. I don't know how to fix phones when a problem arises but for me if
the phone doesn't even power up, I doubt that software alone can fix the
problem.. I'm the first to admit this. I don't have the necessary equipment
to do that,. In order to fix the problem that I experienced with the T28w,
you have to somehow get software into the phone and without power to the
phone, this doesn't seem possible. I just unlock the phones with the
software that I found on the internet (which works) and the cable (which a
friend of mine who works at a telecommunications company "borrowed" from
work). I was just mentioning that I mention the risks to the people (only
friends, family & co-workers) when they ask me to unlock their phones. I
also tell them that I'm not responsible if anything goes wrong. I then tell
them my success rate and failure rate with their exact phone type as well as
with all phones. Since I'm doing this for free (and not to make money) and
I'm already selective about who I will do this for, they are free to make up
their own mind. My original post was just to find out what happens in your
case when something goes wrong and let's say that you can't fix it. For me,
the people that I do this for know what the risks are and that I don't
repair cellphones. They are free to make their own minds. I won't replace
their phones. In the case with the T28W, it was the person's old phone so he
told me that it didn't matter. However, what bugged him was that I had 2 of
them at the same time (one of them was his and the other was someone else's)
and I did both in front of them. The first one worked and with his, it
turned into a paperweight. He saw that I did the same thing and I didn't
purposely do something different to screw up his phone.

| The T28w was a pretty good phone (reception, price, etc.) but the battery
was held to the phone with a clip. If the clip broke, you had to tape the
battery to the phone. The thing that often went wrong with the T28 was the
button to open the flip. There was a button on the side of the phone that
you would push and the flip would automatically open. I saw many T28w's
where the flip would "automatically" open without pushing the button.

| I think i did answer before in my posts the question about something going
wrong ! you said: "let's say you can't fix it"???? why wouldn't I be able
to fix it ? why would I be touching a phone in the first place if I don't
know to fix it or work with or flash it ...etc!
when you're a technician and you have experience and tools believe me you'll
know how to fix it ... when you send those dead phones back to the
manufacturer don't they fix them ?
you borrowed the cable and downloaded free hacked software... don't get mad
at me for saying this but no wonder you killed that phone and didn't know
how to fix it. AND no wonder when someone brings u a phone to unlock
they're taking a risk. I'm not being mean or anything but you can't just
give a phone or a computer or any device to someone who doesn't know much
about what he is doing and tell him to fix it or modify it, the risk there
is about 100% ... and I'm glad you mention it to your friends!

So when every computer peripheral company tells you that turning off your
computer while updating the BIOS may permanently damage the unit, they're
just full of shit?
I'm sure there's a way to replace the BIOS chip, for instance, wiht another
pre-programed one. But is it worth it money-wise?

| I've unlocked phones before without any problems. I don't fix phones. I've
never said that I fix phones. I don't make any money on this. My question
remains? What if you can't fix the phone? Even a computer technician while
fixing a computer can damage it. Accidents do happen despite the best
precautions. Are you willing to replace the phone in the event that you
can't fix it? That is my question. If not, you should explain the risks to
people and inform them that your success rate is 100% but if anything goes
wrong and you can't fix it (but you will try to fix it), you will replace
the phone or you will not replace the phone. That is the only thing I'm
concerned about when I saw your posting. When you drop your negatives at a
photo development place to get developed, you get a receipt which states
which is basically a disclaimer saying that they are only responsible for
the film/negatives and not the contents. Even though people see this, no one
thinks twice about the photo development place purposely damaging or losing
the negatives/phones. I believe that this is good business practice so that
people know what they are getting and if something goes wrong, what they can
expect. In regards to sending a phone back to a manufacturer, like most
inexpensive electronic items, a lot of manufacturers will just replace your
phone with a refurbished or new phone or a phone that someone returned. I'll
give you an example. I buy an inexpensive VCR for $50. It will cost the
manufacturer more to fix it (considering that most technicians are paid in
the neighbourhood of $25/hour) than to just replace it. It is also the
consumer mentality also. Would I pay someone $25 to fix a VCR out of waranty
that I can buy for around $50 when I can buy a new one for $50 and get a 1
year warranty. In regards to the hacked software, and the cable as I
mentioned, I've done over quite a few T28w's with the same cable and same
software and only experienced 1 phone with a T28w that wasn't 100% in
perfect order. Before doing anything to the phone, I mention everything to
them whether they are friends, co-workers, or family. I'm just wondering
what happens if you can't fix the phone and don't say that you can always
fix it. Even a computer technician can't always fix a computer problem. In
regards to the problem that I had with the T28w, can you explain how you can
fix it when it won't even power up? You never explained this. It don't doubt
that it is possible to fix the problem with the T28w but what I'm saying
that I don't see that it is possible to fix it without replacing something
inside the phone either permanently or temporarily in order to reload the
firmware. In order to load firmware, you need power and the device has to
power up.

| "explain the risks to people" what risks ? if the success rate is 100%
this means nothing can go wrong! otherwise it wouldn't be 100% ...
Basically you're trying to MAKE ME admit that it's possible that I could
damage the phone while unlocking it and that there is a chance of killing
the phone completely when unlocking it! because if I say that i will
replace the phone (or not replace it) in case something goes wrong, I'm
also saying that there is a possibility something might go wrong!
so here it goes again: your method is different that my method, there is
NO RISK whatsoever when you bring ME the phone for unlocking and my success
rate is 100% - if your phone works fine before unlocking, it will still
work fine after unlocking. and this is why I said guaranteed service.
you say you don't fix phones and yet you flash them using modified firmware
to unlock them!
UNLOCKING phones is not the same as flashing, fixing or repairing them!
and don't worry about the customers because they do ask if there is a risk
or if the phone will function differently after the unlocking ... mainly
because there are people trying to convince everybody that there are risks
of damaging the phone when unlocking it and becuase people in north america
don't have much knowledge about gsm phones!

| Harry Eugene Ly 2005-12-17, 5:48 pm |
| I just want to know what happens when the phone becomes damaged. For
Ericsson & Sony Ericsson & Palm, I flash phones with hacked firmware that I
found on the internet for free. This works, I've done it with my phones and
never had any issues with them.exept that 1 time. For Nokia's (old style
Nokia's), I use an "unlock" calculator to give me the unlock codes of the
Nokia phone (only works with certain older style phones) which I then enter
into the phyone. Since it didn't cost me anything, I show people where to
find this software or if they don't feel comfortable doing it and I've done
it with their phone before, I will do it for them. I've only had 1 problem.
This was with a phone where the battery wasn't firmly in place. During the
middle of the flashing, the phone lost power and would no longer power up.
As I mentioned, I did this phone quite a few times using the same software
and the same cable and experienced absolutely no problems so I can also say
that my success rate with this particular phone (T28w) was 100%. However I
did have a problem. The person who asked me to unlock his phone knew that I
wasn't responsible just like when peple give their negatives to a photo
development place, the developers aren't responsible for anything other than
just replacing the actual 35mm film yet I'm sure most people don't give this
much thought and still give the film negatives to Walmart, PJC, Pharmaprix,
etc. You can't fix all problems. In my computer example, sure it might be
possible to fix the BIOS/firmware issue by soldering/unsoldering new parts
to the motherboard, etc. but is it worth the time, energy, etc. to do this
or just buy a new motherboard and perform a swap? My question remains, what
will happen if you can't fix the problem? Currently I've never been in a car
accident while driving so I can say that driving with me is 100% safe. I
know that your success rate is currently 100% but that doesn't mean that
when you unlock phones, it is 100% safe since something can go wrong. If you
use a cable and software, then something can go wrong even if you keep
saying that absolutely nothing can go wrong. If that is the case, why don't
you just publicly say that you will replace the phone if something goes
wrong since you have absolutely nothing to lose with your 100% success rate.
Nothing is 100% except death and taxes ;)

| this whole discussion started when I said that you can't break a phone while
unlocking it and you insisted that it's not true.
you're still not getting my point here... I unlock phones using a different
method so even if the battery falls off or my computer crashes or the cable
disconnects or anything happens... the phone will still boot with no
problems since I'm not touching the firmware or modifying the software or
flashing it to unlock it!
that's all I have to say.

| As I mentioned, if that is the case, why don't you just publicly say that
you will replace the phone if something goes wrong since you have absolutely
nothing to lose with your 100% success rate? This is because you know that
something can go wrong even if the chances are very slim and you don't want
to replace something like a Treo 650 or a SonyEricsson P900 if something
goes wrong. I've asked people to fix or modify some of my equipment. The
latest thing was my Xbox. I found 2 people that asked me roughtly for
$50+the cost of the mod. One of them asked for slightly more. One of them
said the same thing like you where he kept saying that nothing will go wrong
and if something did go wrong I wouldn't have to pay him but that nothing
will go wrong and the other person who charged me a bit more (~$5.00 more
for the part & ~$5.00 more for the labour) and told me that nothing will go
wrong but if something did go wrong, he would either fix it or give me his
used Xbox which had a larger hard drive and was modded or give me a new
unmodded Xbox. I obviously went with the 2nd guy since I'm giving both
people >$150 worth of equipment and even though I don't think that the 1st
person would "purposely" damage my Xbox, I didn't feel comfortable paying
someone for a mod chip and having him install it and if my Xbox didn't work
after the installation, I was basically lost my Xbox. My point is that you
know that something can go wrong even though you've unlocked (hundreds) of
phones with a 100% success rate. If you don't believe anything will go
wrong, then why did the person post what he did which could be the truth or
could be a lie and after he posted it why didn't you just clarify that YOU
WILL REPLACE ANY CELLPHONE THAT BECOMES DAMAGED INADVERTENTLY DURING THE
UNLOCKING PROCESS? You have absolutely nothing to lose with your 100%
success rate and you will gain more customers if you believe that you can
fix ALL problems that can arise and that you believe that absolutely NOTHING
can go wrong. I'm not accusing you of purposely damaging anyone's phone like
you did to me when I wrote that a T28w became damaged when I attempted to
update it with modified firmware and the battery dislodged. Before touching
the person's cellphone, he (co-worker) knew my success rate (at that point
100%) and the risks which I told him was not 0% risk. Two people gave me
T28w and both waited at my desk while I flashed the phones with the modified
firmware. The first phone worked perfectly (as did others). The second phone
didn't work because the battery accidentally dislodged (due to fact that his
phone's battery clip wasn't working and the battery was held to the phone
with tape) and his phone didn't work. Both people witnessed what I did and I
didn't do anything different. So I didn't purposely damage one person's
cellphone and not the other person's. I had absolutely nothing to gain from
it since I wasn't charging either of them and if I wasn't on friendly terms
with the 2nd person I just would just have said that I wouldn't unlock his
T28w when he asked me instead of "purposely" damaging a phone which at the
time of the incident was over 5 years old.

Don't you have to put in some *new* firmware into the phone, therefore
erasing the one currently on it?
It's called flashing.
You can enable some hidden features on some phones just by inputting some
codes, but unlocking it so it can be used on any network is indeed flashing
its firmware.
(otherwise every phone could be unlocked with some codes found on Google).

| WOW el bandito!!! shows that you really know alot about unlocking
phones...have you heard of fido or other service providers making you pay
250$ and providing you with a code to unlock the phone that you bought from
them??? apparently NOT!
NO it is NOT flashing.
Harry, you're mixing apples and oranges again... moding an Xbox requires
openning it and messing with the hardware, unlocking a phone doesn't! it
shows that ALOT of people (look at the post above by elbandito) don't know
much about gsm phones or about unlocking them and I feel it is my obligation
to inform them since i offer the service.
unlocking a phone does not require openning it, it does not require flashing
it, it does not require modifying its hardware, it is 100% safe ... it
involves inputting (calculated) codes in the phone or reading them from the
phone and inputting them in it.
Why did you kill the T28 (unintentionally)? well because you used the wrong
method to do it , of course it worked a few times but it was risky, and it
doesn't mean that everyone is using your method to unlock phones.
and I can't believe that after all this you come and ask why did that person
post what he posted about his phone being damaged, did you even READ his
posts and replies??? did it occur to you that he was doing that on purpose
because I used the wrong date on my PC ???
what a waste... !

Then how come those codes are not floating around on the internet?
I mean, people are able to find DVDs not on sale yet, just a quick google
allows people to find about everything, yet those codes never show up?
gimme a break.

| If it is 100% safe, why don't you just say that you will replace any phone
that you unintentially damaged and that you can't fix? The reason you won't
say this is that you know that anything can go wrong and the only thing that
is 100% is death and taxes. Yes, I know that unlocking a phone doesn't
require opening up the phone and unlocking an Xbox does require opening it
up. My point is that unlocking a phone depending on the method used is not
100% safe and you know it. Any method that requires inputting software into
the phone is not safe. Any method that requires inputting just the unlock
codes for that partiuclar phone based on the IMEI number of the phone and
the GSM service provider is safer as long as a cable is not used to read the
codes. I know that reading the codes from a phone shouldn't cause any
problems and in most cases won't cause any problems but as I mentioned,
anything can go wrong. If you are so sure that you won't damage a cellphone
and that you can fix any problem that arises, you would just say that you
will replace any phone that becomes damaged during the unlocking process and
that you can't fix. As I mentioned, you have absolutely nothing to lose with
your success rate of 100% and you would probably gain more customers. Yes I
did read what he posted and I seem to remember that it was someone else who
mentioned that your date was wrong and he mentioned that you broke his
phone. He then commented that you didn't know how to change the date/time on
your computer but that was after his first post. The point is: IF YOU
BELIEVE THAT IT IS 100% SAFE AND THAT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING CAN GO WRONG THAT
YOU CAN'T FIX, JUST SAY THAT YOU WILL REPLACE ANY CELLPHONE THAT HAPPENS TO
BECOME DAMAGED AND YOU ARE UNABLE TO FIX IT. You have absolutely nothing to
lose based on your 100% success rate and your belief that the method(s) you
use are 100% safe. In fact, you will probably gain clients if you do this.
The only way I would ue your service based on the fact that you won't say
that you will replace any cellphone that happens to become damaged and you
can't fix it is if I buy a new cellphone with a warranty and the store has a
return/exchange policy. If it becomes damaged during the unlocking process,
I would just exchange it at the store for a new one. I wouldn't get a phone
unlocked that no longer has a warranty and can't be exchanged at a store
from anyone who thinks that it his/her method is 100% safe but won't offer
any form of restitution in the event that something does go wrong. If it is
100% safe, why not just offer to replace the phone in the event that it
becomes damaged and you can't fix it. The only reason I can see for this is
that you know that it is not 100% safe even though your success rate is 100%
and you don't want to be responsible for replacing someone's cellphone.

| Harry Eugene Ly 2005-12-18, 5:48 pm |
| Actually "H" is correct. Unlocking doesn't always require flashing. There
are 2 ways that I know of to unlock a GSM phone. One is to flash it using
new unlocked firmware and the other is to input the unlock codes for the
phone. One is safer than the other but neither is 100% safe. The unlock
codes are different for all phones and it is based on the IMEI number of the
phone and the cellphone provider so googling for it will not work unless you
come across the "unlock calculator" like the one that is available for free
for older style Nokia phones. Placing new firmware on the phone requires
"flashing" and is not 100% safe. Reading the unlock codes from the phone
itself is also not 100% safe (but is safer than putting firmware onto the
phone). Before you say that all you're doing is reading the unlock codes
from the firmware and absolutely nothing can go wrong, how many times has it
happened when you took someone's floppy disk to read some information and
you gave the floppy disk back to the person and he wasn't able to read
anything from the disk. All you did was read from his floppy disk. Anything
can go wrong. Nothing is 100% safe. Using the unlock code is safer than
putting firmware onto the phone. Reading the unlock code from the phone
itself isn't 100% safe even though the chances of something going wrong are
slim, they aren't 0%. If it was 100% safe as "H" mentions, he would just
offer to replace any phone that becomes damaged during the unlocking process
which he can't fix. I'm not sayi | | |
