Sprint has actually asked some of the manufacturers to disable
the #777 function in some recently released phones, so it'll
probably depend on the phone.

1) Why would Sprint ask some manufactors to disable it, but not others?
2) Is there a list somewhere of which ones will/won't support #777 with
laptop usage?

A few months ago, while shopping for a new phone, I made some calls to
Sanyo and Samsung. The folks at Sanyo told me that Sprint had requested
that all phones, after the MM-8300, have data capabilities disabled.
Samsung said, at the time, that Sprint made no such requests of them.
One source, to find out about available drivers and cables is FutureDial
(http://www.futuredial.com/), although I'm sure there are others.

That's just plain weird.
But thanks for the info.

| Too many folks are stealing data services from Sprint by using the #777.

Explain to me, oh self-righteous one, how using a feature
provided and supported but not charged for by Sprint is "stealing"?

You don't have to be an XXX, Chris.
Sprint provides, and supports, the service *if* you pay for it.

Search back in this newsgroups's archives a few months, and you should
find the whole ugly discussion about whether or not tethering a laptop
is stealing.
Mij must be bored if he wants to drag this up again...
Ease your consicence...it's not stealing...

That sheds no light whatsoever on why Sprint would ask Sanyo to disable
#777 but not Samsung -- which is what this thread is about.
But thanks for the inevitable "stealing" sermon, which is boringly
predictable every time tethered use comes up.

They may *have* asked Samsung, since my conversation.

But (from what I've heard, which granted may be incorrect), the current
new Sanyo EV-DO phone[s] have it disabled, whereas in the current new
Samsung EV-DO phones, it's enabled. Does anybody have any authoritative
info on this?

Not too long ago, I ordered a data cable for my A840, directly from Samsung.
A few days, I went back to order one for a friend, but they're no longer available.
While there are certainly other possiblities, I've got the gut feeling that this
was a direct request of Sprint's.
