| Sprint Nextel paid chairman's relative $18M
Wednesday October 11, 12:09 pm ET
Sprint Nextel Corp. paid about $18 million in commissions in 2005 to two companies owned by the brother-in-law of Executive Chairman Tim Donahue.
In a filing Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S - News) said it had made the payments to North American Wireless and The Customer Center, both owned by Glenn Grella, Donahue's brother-in-law.
Sprint Nextel spokesman David Gunasegaram said Wednesday that Grella has been an authorized dealer for the company, first with Nextel Communications Inc., since 1997.
Gunasegaram said the timing of Sprint Nextel's disclosure of its business dealings with Grella had nothing to do with the company's announcement Monday that Donahue will retire as executive chairman of Sprint Nextel effective Dec. 31.
