| yes they do actually, but it is only available at walmart stores, and
you pretty much have to go to a sprint store to add minutes to it, or
any place you can find a precash machine.

| I hate to say this, because I really like Sprint... but probably the best
pre-paid plan available is Cingular's GoPhone "Pick Your Plan." It's good
for prepaid use because of the rollover minutes and low per-minute rates.
Almost all the other plans find some way for your prepaid minutes to be
lost/expired/wasted if you don't use them.
Now on the other hand, if your reason for going prepaid is that you have
lousy credit and are worried about a big deposit, I think you should give
Sprint's standard plans some consideration. This is because Sprint has much
more liberal credit policies than other carriers. They almost never require
customers to provide a deposit. Instead, they have a "spending limit" which
prevents you from going over a certain dollar amount on your monthly
usage/outstanding balance.

The only reason that I want to use it is because I have a Sprint phone
sitting here (Treo 650) that's collecting dust. I'd like to use it as a
backup phone for times when my company phone goes turtle-feet-up.
Sprint won't activate it without a 2 year contract and ETF, even if I'm not
buying a phone. I thought that pre-paid might be a nice way around this.
I haven't been in a wal-mart store in years. I'll have to go and see if I
can find the machine. Maybe this weekend.
Thanks.

| Aha. I'm surprised that Sprint won't activate it without the contract and
termination fee business. You might try calling them again, as Sprint is
known for some agents being more flexible than others. At the very least,
you should have a 1-year option available. Other ideas:
* Mojo Mobile offers prepaid plans, uses the Sprint PCS network, and perhaps
they would activate it for you (though I doubt it):
http://www.mymojomobile.com
* Do you enjoy hacking? The following threads claim to show you how to
switch your Sprint CDMA over to Verizon:
http://tinyurl.com/5d93w
http://tinyurl.com/y5pzye
* Find a Verizon 650 owner to swap with
* Your best bet may be to sell it on eBay. Used 650s in decent condition go
for $150-$200 there.

| Account splending limit plans are no longer an option, or if they are
today will not be for very much longer as the program is being
discontinued. Those still on it are fine, but they are not signing up
any customers on them, instead opting for deposit requirements.

Virgin Mobile "sub-contracts" their service from Sprint.

Depends on where you buy the service.
I have a Virgin Mobile phone that runs on the T-Mobile network.

Really? For years VM was *exclusively* a Sprint MVNO and did not use
T-Mo at all.

That's still true in the United States.

| I'd try them again as I moved from my phone to a Treo 600 without that
problem and they were very nice about it. Only problem was losing the
incentive for a new phone which isn't nice.

| If I am not mistaken, the gentleman siad he wanted this as a backup
phone for when his service he has wouldnt work, or 'Turtle Feet Up' i
believe was how he put it. so he would be starting a new service with
sprint, with the treo, thus a 2yr contract for the plan.
As for the problem you had in losing your insentive for a new one, I am
pretty sure that is no longer an issue. you might want to check out
sprintrebates.com and check your qualification for a rebate towards a
new phone. I was checking this for a friend of mine a few days ago as
he had mentioned something like what your said, he had an old phone he
activated as a replacement when his unfortunately feel into some water
and didnt have total equipment protection. He was fully qualified for
a rebate in spite of the change that had happened with the equipment
just a few months ago.

| You me with that one. I Should have said it differently as I've found
some who own a treo are anxious enough to 'swap' the phone to avoid the
contract situation and wasn't sure he was sure about keeping the other.
Thanks for the info on the incentive. Will peek at that.

| Did peek at that one and Sprint didn't change that aspect however from
what I saw 'someone' extended my contract for another year without
permission since last checking my online data. Looks like another call
to these guys and hope that is all it is going to take.

That is exactly the situation. Thank you.
Bascially they don't want my monthly fees unless I sign a long-term contract.
100% benefit for them, 0% for me. In the end my Treo will continue to
collect dust. (Or I'll sell it on e-bay.)
My company pays for my primary cell phone. It would have been nice to have a
backup, but not with the contract.

I checked with them. You need a mojo phone to use the mojo service. Bugger.
I also checked with the wal-mart sprint pre-paid guy. He said you can't use
a "regular" sprint phone, but you need a "special" pre-paid phone.

Good man, nice to know there are any out there who haven't been to walfarts
in years.
Last time I was in one was a couple years ago when I was stuck in Louisiana
for a couple months, didn't have a whole lot else to do after work but walk
around walmarts, hoping some hot bayou babe would take me home.
I actually did score, more than once, but thats another story.
The only thing I actually bought after all those hours walking around was an
atomic clock that caught my eye.

Nothing against them, I just usually have a better shopping experience
elsewhere.
The part that bugs me the most ... 10,000 registers (Ok, perhaps only 100)
and only 15 cashiers at Christmas time. The #1 rule of retail: Get the
customers money.
