Hello everyone,

I just purchased a new Katana phone for work (not sure if I
will keep it) and was kind of disappointed in finding out how locked
the phone was in terms of uploading backgrounds and ringtones from the
PC to phone. Does anyone know if any of the Sprint phones are capable
of doing this?

It's not a big deal but I have 6 year old Sanyo 4000 phone and see
that the only difference is a color screen and text messaging. To me
it doesn't make the cost of this $280 phone feasible.

The only reason I want to keep Sprint and haven't switched over to
Cingular is that on the GSM network all incoming calls make a buzzing
sound on unshielded speakers that drive me nuts.

There are a number of commercial programs for doing this. The
quickest and simplest (as far as I recall) is DataPilot
(http://www.susteen.com). It should be about $35~40 off the shelf, and
it comes with a cable.

There's also free, open-source software (www.bitpim.org) and
data cables are sold all over the place, for example:

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "locked" however. If I'm
not mistaken, the Katana is a Power Vision phone, and though I don't
use Vision, I suppose the overall concept is that you'll use the fast
net connection it provides to download whatever you wish directly from
net sources (rather than upload from your PC). Nevertheless, for those
of us who don't use Vision, BitPim or the commercial products are
perfectly viable alternatives.

No, the 6600 Katanas are Vision, not Power Vision phones.
I recently read elsewhere that BitPim does not (yet) handle Katana.
I have no direct knowledge of that.

The Katana is a "regular' PCS Vision phone ($15 for internet) not power
vision phone ($25 for internet).
