Any way to change caller I.D. output for secondary phone?
|
|
| schrodinger's cat 2006-11-01, 3:33 pm |
| My SO and I recently switched to a shared plan because it was
substantially less expensive than our combined individuals plans. My
plan was about to expire, while hers had quite a bit of time left on her
contract, so we just upgraded her plan to share our minutes, and I let
my contract run out. This change has brought about an unexpected, and
unintended, consequence. Now, when I make a call on my phone, which is
now the second phone on the plan, the person I call sees my SO's name on
their caller I.D., since she is the account holder. This is very
confusing to my business contacts, since they are not familiar with my
SO and thus don't recognize her name. It's also awkward for me to have
to explain why I am essentially using her account. Does anyone know if
it is possible to get Sprint to change this so that my name will appear
on calls made from my phone number?

| The Best way to get this done is to have your SO as the account holder
dial *2 or 1-888-211-4727 for customer care, and at the voice prompt
say "trouble" or "wireless web" this will get you to the tech support
group, and they can make the change from there. [this is where you
will most likely be transfered to from customer care anyway] The
reason to have your SO call in is to avoid any hassles due to policy
regarding changes to the account.

My phone is mostly used for business, so I went into the sprint store and
the manager was able to change my caller ID from his countertop computer.
Now the display shows my company name when I call someone. They have to
put the names in backwards, since the system is programmed to display last
name first.
I suppose you could get them to do the same thing with your name so that the
caller ID displays your name as written.

So for example, "Cat Schrodinger's" would show up as "Schrodinger's
Cat"? ;-)

My 2 Sprint phones show "unavailable" on caller id. Number is there but no
name.

Yes.

| It is possible that this is because of a limitation of your landline
company, they may either a. do not support enhanced caller id, or have
their system set up so that it is querying the infomation in a format
differently than most others do, and thus it cannot read the names.
Just a thought.

Caller ID works fine at my house. I've always assumed that some cell
providers do not provide "name" and only number caller ID data. Sprint has
not provided "name" data in my area as long as I've had Sprint. Not just my
phone. My daughter has a different provider and her "name" comes through
with caller id.
I've always thought it odd that though Sprint phones have caller id receive
they only show incoming number. Never "name". I have to associate the
incoming number with a name in my address book for the phone to show the
name of incoming caller. And because of that limitation I often let calls go
to voice mail not knowing who is calling me.

| I assume when you are talking about having to associate a name with the
number in your address book, you are talking about your cell phone.
This is typical, and not just a sprint phenomenon. I have worked for a
few different cell companies, both GSM and CDMA, and all of them you
had to do the sort of thing you discribe. The Interesting thing is, at
those 'other' companies, when someone would call in and report that
their caller id was not showing up correctly on a landline phone, we
had to call [guess who] "sprint" to get the issue corrected. This was
their land line division, I am guessing it would be embark that would
need to be called now in regard to it. But even then, occasionally,
there would be places in the US that they could not fix, this due to
the set up of the particular landline provider. It may be worth the
time to call in to tech support, and have them make sure everything is
set up correctly as far as your caller id is concerned, if all is well
there, then the issue is how your landline company queries the
information. I assure you as far as what is available in the signal
that is sent from the cell phone, to the tower, through the switch, to
the landline company, the name information is sent also. If it were
not, then where I am at, we would not be able to see names coming
through on the caller ID on the landlines from Sprint phones, but we
do, as well as from other cell providers. Breaking up Ma Bell while
good for competition and pricing, has not always proved best, as there
are some landline providers that are not quite up to speed in some
aspects of the business. This caller ID thing being one thing at least
that I have noticed.

OK, so now I'm wondering if "name" caller ID from my Sprint cell phones will
show up on caller ID gadgets in other parts of the U.S. In my St. Louis, MO
area the name does not show on landline Caller ID boxes. So if the "name" is
showing in other parts of the country it is likely the same name from both
our Sprint cell phones. I'll have to start asking people if / which name
shows when I call a landline out of my area. If "name" shows in other places
I'd prefer my wife's name to show from her phone.
Like I said in earlier post... when my daughter calls my house using a
non-Sprint cell phone... her name shows on caller id box. I forget at the
moment who her provider is.

Upon request, Sprint will "switch authorized user" associated with a =
line.
That will make the newly authorized name appear, for those landline =
carriers
who choose to interrogate Sprint's database for the caller name.
It will *not* affect the caller ID display for those carriers who refuse
to interrogate Sprint's database.
Some of the Competitive Local Exchange Carriers request the name from =
Sprint,
but as far as I can tell, most of the Legacy (Bell) carriers do not.
As daffydd explained, displaying a name is a function of the landline =
carrier,
not a function of the geographical area they serve.
My ILEC charges me extra for "Caller ID With Name", but they cheat me.
They deliver the name only if they don't have to get it from somebody =
else.=20

OK... thanks to all for the explanation. I didn't realize that caller id
functionality was so different between cell phone providers and land line
providers. My land line is AT&T and they are all over the place. What about
911 emergency calls? No name provided to dispatcher?
