Using a Nextel phone

| I have a nextel blackberry through my business that they will be
turning over to the employees soon. I already have a personal account
with Sprint so i would like to just transfer the phone...essentially
using a nextel phone on the Sprint service. Is this possible? I know
there are different bands that are used by cell phones but couldn't i
get the phone unlocked or something?
Thanks for any input.

No. You cannot use a Nextel iDEN device on Sprint's CDMA network.
However, Sprint/Nextel are in the process of consolidating their billing
systems. Once complete, you should be able to add your Nextel handset to
your Sprint account. It won't work as a CDMA phone, but will work
wherever it works now (iDEN coverage areas).

If you mean using the Nextel (iDEN) handset on Sprint's CDMA network, no
it's not possible. However, you CAN get your Sprint account converted
to a Nextel account without paying an ETF. You would just have to pick
a Nextel plan.

The problem isn't with unlocking the phone. iDEN and CDMA phones use
different signaling formats, which is equivalent to speaking different
languages. As a result, an iDEN handset would not be able to make sense
of a CDMA signal, nor vice-versa.
There's talk of a hybrid handset, but even those rumors indicate that
this hybrid would use CDMA for voice and data, and iDEN for push to
talk. So even there the interoperability would be limited.
