What is the difference between GSM 850/900?

| Some triband phones have 850/1800/1900 and some have 900/1800/1900
which region uses 850 and will 850 work in 900 regions? What is the
difference between the two.

850 is for use in North/South America. 900 is for use in Europe and
Asia with extremely limited use outside that area (in Cuba and
Venezuela as the American exceptions.) 900 is definitely needed in
Europe but for best coverage it's best to have both 900 and 1800 in
Europe. 1900 is only in the Americas. For best reception in the
Americas a phone with 850 and 1900 is the best thing to get.

Actually it is 800/1900 in the USA and 900/1800 in most of the rest of the
world. The difference is the "frequency band" and a phone designed for one
will not work in the other.
