Yeah, ive been converted for over a week. I did it manually. The new
voicemail icon is Sweet....
To get it early, see if your phone allows you to change your voicemail
access number. (somewhere in the message settings usually (aka text message,
mms, etc). If it allows you, then you can call up 808-255-9999 (new
voicemail access number.)
If it welcomes you to your new voicemail, your ready. (this should be the
case for chicago.)
Setup like normal. Takes a few minutes. Not that bad..
If you have old voicemails on the current (old) system, try to clear them
out. Otherwise in 30 days they will be deleted. To get to them once this is
done, hold down the 1 key. When the voicemail pics up, press 00

Once the instructions below are done, all new calls will be forwarded to
your new voicemail.
Set your call forwarding option like this:

*004*18082559999*11*
30#
press keys just like that above. then hit send.

2. Change VM no to : +18082559999 (as mentioned above. Most phones will
allow you to do this. a friend of mines old siemens phone diddn't let him.
If your phone will now allow you. (rare) your going to either wait for it to
happen automatically or dial the 8082559999 number. (considered a voicemail
call on my bill. Comes up as 123)
3. Call VM
4.send yourself a test message. (press 2). Hang up. Wow! a new icon!

We've been on new voicemail system for a few months now here in New York,
and my VM access number is still 805-637-7243 (which spells 805-MESSAGE),
as it was before. Not sure if the access numbers are different in
different markets, but I loosely remember that this was the same number I
had with the old system...

I've never heard of 808-255-9999 number, though rumor had it, that before
the number portability kicked in, any T-mobile number with 9999
substituted for last four digits went to voicemail. So maybe you just hit
one of those numbers of a message center that was already converted. But
when your market *officially* converts to new VM system, you will
probably have your old access number and I think it may even transfer
your saved messages along...

I dialed the number and it is a message center. 808 is Hawaii. Oddly
enough, my 808 number stills forwards to the 805 (So. California)
message center.

Prior to T-Mobile unifying their voicemail center number to +1 805
MESSAGE (+1 805 637 7243) voicemail center numbers were generally area
code (your prefix) - 9999. In most areas that still works even in the
old Omnipoint areas where the voicemail center was area
code/prefix-MAIL (6245) T-Mobile instructs you that your voicemail
center number is +18056377243 but often you can use other codes that
end in 9999. Evidently using the voicemail center number for Hawaii
works so you can use the MWI even if your area has not been converted
yet.

That's what I heard. But with number portability it's no longer possible
to use *ANY* t-mobile number this way, as in my case - my number was
ported from Sprint short time after portability kicked in, and
subsequently my (AAA)XXX-9999 (where AAA is area code and XXX is
exchange) is most probably owned by Sprint still (as they usually get the
numbers in blocks with the same exchange)... And it's possible that in
new blocks of numbers T-mobile acquires they won't have the 9999 number
go to VM.

So, you can use it while it works, but there's no guarentee it will work
tomorrow... Just like the formerly free t-zones -- it's there for you
today, but T-mobile is not officially announcing it, so it may be gone
tomorrow without notice. Keep a note of +1-805-MESSAGE number just in
case!

Over on howardforums.com, people have been using the 808 number for months
without any issues. This originally started many months ago.
Two things have to be done for this mwi (voicemail icon) method to work.
1. t-mobile has setup your new voicemail box on the new system. (This is
different than being converted. The actual box is done in advance)
2. you dial any already converted voicemail access number. 808 is just one.
If you dial a number using the old voicemail still, you get the old system.

When Hawaii got the new VM system with MWI we did not change from the
805-MESSAGE number. I'm surprised that Hawaii customers aren't using the
Hawaii number.

Once they convert your number, the 805 number works with the new voicemail.
Until then, you still get the old one.

What new system? Is that why my Southern California phone's voicemail was

Yes, this means you are on the new system, which will no longer sent you a
text message saying you have so many voicemail messages, but a tape reel
icon will show on your screen

T-Mobile is in process of converting their voicemail platform to the
Comverse system and started last December in Hawai'i. The conversion
has happened in many areas but is not supposed to be complete until
sometime in 2006. One of the features of the new system is when a
voicemail message has been deposited your handset will show a MWI i.e.
a message waiting indicator. Different handsets do it differently,
but commonly you have some variation on a tape reel that looks
somewhat like o_o . Prior to your area getting the new voicemail
system you'll often get a message when you access voicemail detailing
the change. When the change does happen if you have saved messages on
the old system you should be able to access them for 30 days.
Accessing them is by keying 00 if I remember correctly.

Im using the 808 number. Once your number converted, you can use the 805
number. 808 is already converted. Which is why it works for me.

I find it funny and a little ironic that all this fuss is over the fact
that people wanna see a little reel to reel tape thingy on their phone
when they have a voice message...how many people (especially young
ones) even have a reel to reel tape player? The humor is in the choice
of the reel to reel icon which in my opinion is an archaic symbol in
21st century cellular technology, not the concept of a MWI itself.

Im glad my v620 shows an envelope with ))) on the side. (Though one can
argue in the age of the internet, an envelope icon is just as ludicrous
as a reel to reel tape one. Maybe in another generation, kids will be
asking "what were envelopes?").

Well, for me the benefit was knowing that indeed a VM is waiting. Making it
an SMS msg was a PITA because you'd have to open the message and delete it.
While I know a lot of people use SMS more than calling, I'm not one of them.
If I didn't have SMS I wouldn't care a bit.

Did it tell you what number it was from? I only received "You have 1 new
voicemail message, dial 123 to retrieve" text. No number... Or was it
back to Voicestream days?

On the other hand I find the new system more useful, because it is not
always convenient to check VM right upon arrival, and if I read the SMS
there's no longer any reminder on phone screen that VM is waiting. Now
the icon stays there until the message is received, so much harder to
forget about it...

The old Glenayre system did that for a short time in my area and then
they removed the CID from it.

It should be pretty evident who the call is from since the last
"missed call" in your call log should show who that was.

Well, it's been more than a few months since they changed the VM
platform in California!! It's been even*more* months (getting close
to a year) since Hawai'i was changed. The entire T-Mobile system
should be changed by some time in 2006.

Not if your phone was turned off and the call went directly to voicemail.

Sprint's VM setup provided CID info for all voicemail calls where CID wasn't
blocked. It'd be nice if T-Mo did the same.
