The $39.99 for 1000 "Whenever" minutes has been expanded to 1500 minutes for
the same price. If you need it, $10 more adds unlimited nights & weekends. A
new 1 year commitment is required but that was fine with me.

I should have also pointed out that the increase isn't automatic, you have
to call and order it.

When a cell signal is as bullet-proof as a land line dial tone, that may
make more sense.

LOL. That really depends on how bad your land line is. Where I live,
T-M's signal is actually better than my land line.

Ditched our phone 5 years ago , got Cable internet for $10 LESS than the
phone+dial-up cost, never looked back.

YMMV

The biggest problem is what to do about your alarm system.

Why? Alarm systems run over dry copper pairs anyhow. You don't need dialtone.

Most residential alarms use a dialer to contact the central station. Most
dialers are not compatible with VOIP service so a landline is still required
unless you upgrade the dialer or use a web based central reporting device.
In Houston, Time Warner offers a $12.95/month alarm monitoring service over
the cable using the broadband capabilities.

Yes. Thanks for the correction/clarification. Now that I think about it, ADT
does say that a phone line is required to use their residential service.

Add to that no-go list: fax, DirecTV/Dish DVR phone connections,
and 56K dialup modems (in case your broadband goes down).
And don't forget that your VOIP probably won't work when there's
a power blackout.

My directv dvr has not been hooked up since last january. Not a problem
there.

When Comcast HSI goes down (which happened a few times over two years), I
use my T-Mobile Internet.

I know for a fact that Dish Network charges $5 more per month if the
DVR is not connected to a phone line. Not sure what the DirecTV
penalty is for no DVR phone line.

There is none. someone did a review of the new r15 and it did not prompt him
for a phone line at all during installation. Who knows, wave of the future?

I have the 1000 minutes for $39.99 plan. It includes unlimited weekends (not
nights). If the 1500 minute plan does not include unlimited weekends, then
I'm not sure it's a better deal than 1000 with unlimited weekends, for the
same price. Besides, I never have come anywhere close to using up my 1000
minutes.

Regarding the post about disconnecting home landline service, I don't think
that's a good idea. I rarely use my long distance carrier any more, as I
make LD calls with my cell phone, since there is also free long distance and
no roaming on the phone. But I would not disconnect my local service. Cell
phone service is not always reliable, and the connections are not as good.
What if there were an emergency, and you could not get through on your cell
phone? Besides, many people rely on their local phone service for Internet
connection, whether through dial-up or DSL.

Any idea if this deal (1500 mins) will extend thru January? I want to
get a phone from Amazon but have to wait til next year for the rebates
to repeat as the current one ends on the 28th of Dec.
