Author Why is this newsgroup still called "Voicestream"?
MS

This just occurred to me. It has been years now since Voicestream was bought
out by T-Mobile. A lot of people probably are not aware of that connection.
Many might look for a T-Mobile newsgroup, not find one, and assume that no
such NG exists.

I don't know who has responsibility for newsgroup naming (is there a
"Newsgroup Duke" in the "Kingdom of the Internet"? ;-) ), but it sure would
make much more sense to have this NG be called simply:
alt.cellular.t-mobile, or alt.cellular.t-mobile-usa.

The question "Why?" has two possible answers:

1. Why not?
2. Because.

A joke from logic/philosophy.

I guess this issue has been brought up before and the answer if I
recall was along the lines of it's too much of a pain in the XXX to
change it. Being ignorant of the technical aspects of NG name changes,
I accept that.

This was proposed to thee "Gods of the Usenet" when the merger was
complete. They simply responded that if they change it now they will
just have to change it again in a couple of years when T-Mobile merges
once again.

The AT&T newsgroup is virtually dead now with all of the posters
moving to the Cingular group.

There's absolutely nothing to stop ANYONE from following the process for
creating a new newsgroup. For alt groups that's a lot less involved than
groups in the Big 8 hierarchies (soc, comp, news, etc.)

My understanding, which may be about 10 years out of date, is that while
there was a way to create Usenet groups, there was no way to delete or reame
them. That's why there's probably now about 40,000 groups.

While that is true, it doesn't present a major barrier to starting a new T-Mobile
newsgroup. We'd simply subscribe to both. Then gradually as traffic on the old
group dwindled to nothing, people would unsubscribe from it.

That's true. However, many, if not most newservers delete groups from
their active file that haven't had activity within a certain period.

There is indeed an "alt.cellular.t-mobile" newsgroup! I was wondering why
it was so quiet there, but it seems very few ISP's have allowed
subscriptions to it...yet. Earthlink does access it, but Supernews & many
others do not. The only way you'll get it is to complain to your ISP to add
it.

Yep... Time Warner is definitely NOT carrying this group. Will have to
request it.

Nor does SBC carry it.

although I have not confirmed it myself, looking at the discussion in
alt.config, it seems there may not be a request for an
alt.cellular.t-mobile newsgroup. Maybe it's just a "local" group on a few
servers that was created and then rmgroup'ed?

Neither is ATTGlobal.

It doesn't turn up on Google Groups either, so I'm beginning to
believe it is indeed not an actual Usenet newsgroup, but something
that never propagated past a few servers.[color=darkred]
