Keep my number but switch to pre-pay?

| Does anyone know if I can keep my cell number with T-mobile if I
switch from monthly service to pre-pay? Alas, T-mobile has terrible
coverage where I am, so I've had to get a VZW phone, but I want to
keep my t-mobile phone and number for when I travel abroad.
Come to think of it, does pre-pay allow international roaming?
Thanks.

Argh. Can anyone suggest a good, inexpensive way for me to have have
a U.S. number that rings when I travel overseas, and which offers
voice-mail and a voice-mail indicator? What I've been doing so far is
forwarding my main number to my T-mobile number.
Thanks.

| Given the high rates to most places perhaps getting a prepaid SIM in the
country you're visiting would work if you forwarded your US number to
that one. In fact, you could forward the VZW phone to a landline that
has CF with remote access so you could forward the landline once you got
to the country you're visiting. The LD rates on the forwarded call would
probably be cheaper too.

I don't have a landline with CF. That's the problem.
Also, the reason I want to use a roaming SIM (in addition to a local
SIM) is so I can see the VM indicator, rather than calling in for
messages.

You mentioned you have a verizon account. You COULD port the number to
Verizon and use the Samsung World phone that they offer:
http://tinyurl.com/3w6y2
The Samsung SCH-A790 is a phone that works on Verizon's CDMA network
while in the US, and will operate on the GSM network internationally on
the same account.
The GSM raoming rates do not seem to be cheap though, but then not
having roamed myself, I don't know what would be considered reasonable.
