I was thinking about purchasing a T-Mobile phone (motorola v188 if anyone
wants to know) and I was going to buy it online. The advertisement says
that the phone (and others) are free. Is that true and if so, how will i
activate my phone after i get it? will it come to me activated or what?
Thanks in advance!

Then it is free. You know you have to (electronically) sign a contract.
The provider pays your phone upfront and you pay the provider back every
month. Subsidized phones are usually carrier-locked and carrier-branded,
though. GSM phones do not need activation. Insert the SIM card, recharge
the battery, and start using it.

Subtract the activation cost of $39.99 (or is it $29.99, don't remember) and you are still in the plus
column! To the previos poster - GSM phones don't require activation, but SIMs do. So the first time you
buy a phone with a new line of service (which is what you have to do in order to get a free phone and a
few bucks on top), you will be charged activation fee on your first bill. Next time when you upgrade or buy
a new phone there won't be any activation, just move the SIM to a new phone. On the dark side, you
won't get a deal as sweet as those at Amazon when upgrading.
