Amazon is selling Razr for 49.99 after rebates for new contract only. If
anyone is interested, here is the link:

And Razr and other premium phones such as Nokia 6230i and others are
free with a two year contract in Europe from such places as Car Phone
Warehouse and Phonehouse. No pesky rebates to deal with either.

True, but in the UK, those two are both free on one year contracts (and with
additional cashback in some cases).

I would suggest that you have heard wrong then!!!

Granted, it's not got all of the bells and whistles that some of its
competitors have, but it is an excellent phone!!

I don't care about the bells and whistles at all. The reception is not where
it should be.

Hang on a minute. In your last post you said "I've heard", and now you're
stating that you find the reception to be not that good. Now either you
have the phone or you don't. If you don't, then you're not really in a
position to comment.

As for me, I find the V3 no worse than any other phone, and better than most
for reception.

I got one of these free from O2 two days after they were released. It has good and bad points. Best
things are style and size worst is slow response to keypresses and glitchy firmware. Lack of decent
memory space/card slot and no video taking capability are a pain so is no IRDA. It is more robust
than it looks, mine having been used in a buiolding site environment for the last 5 months and
still going strong. The software has crashed about a dozen times.

It's a good phone ya, but it is basically just a V600 in a more nice housing
with a very high price tag, now if we were talking of the V635, then we are
talking excellent phone!

Note that it is not really a rebate, it is a $150 Amazon credit. Basically
Amazon is returning their kickback from Cingular.

What are you using IRDA for? it's an antiquated format, barely does
56k, and is supplanted by bluetooth.

The video is actually there, it requires a hack to get it working
though. I just did my first SEEM edit but I don't know if I want to
get into the FLEX stuff.

Definitely better than most for reception, I tried out a v400 that
was useless.

Mor than likely you heard from people who haven't used the phone. When it
comes to working as a PHONE, very few phones can compare to Razr.

It's rated pretty high for reception.

My point is that in Europe these premium phones are free on contract.
In the US the best deals you're still paying $50 up front. Free is
generally better than not free!

Well many people don't care if they get ripped off so they can have the
latest designer phone on the block. Let's see, a few months ago fools were
paying nearly $500 and now they are down to $49. What a deal! I tried two
different ones, the reception was not nearly as good as my three year old
Nokia. Hey maybe they were bad ones huh?

Capn

On that note, why the hell is is cheaper to purchase gsm phones in europe?
Is it simply that the coverage is more vast or another reason?

Economies of scale? We use nothing but GSM here.

Maybe because some of us (not me)Americans are gullible dumb asses willing
to spend a fortune to have the latest gadget phone at any price so they can
be cool. A reasonable person would wait a few months and get it for next to
nothing.

They aren't! Without committing to a plan the Nokia 6230i is 390
Euros "zonder abonnement" (without contract) in the Netherlands. The
Razr V3 is 460 Euros "zonder abonnement" in the Netherlands. Hardly
cheap. The difference in Europe is that you'll get these premium
phones free with a one or two year commitments. In the US you'll have
to pay $50 or so for a V3.

your info is what is antiquated, IrDA supports up to 4Mb rates

If you're going to attack someone's posts, it helps if you have a
mastery of vocabulary in addition to correct information.

Speeds for IrDA v. 1.0, which is what most phones with IrDA conform to,
range from 2400 to 115200 kbps.
