this post shows places where users say they have seen edge speeds.

http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...8&postcount=222

it seems to be rolling out as they are doing the voice mail conversions.

How richly ironic. Los Angeles isn't on the list, Cleveland is, and when
VoiceStream/T-Mobile *finally* launched in Cleveland, back before I moved
from there, Cleveland was the last of the 25 biggest cities in the US to get
GSM. :)

Of course, that list *is* a year old...

Hm, interesting ...
Do you also have a list of T-Mo phones that are EDGE capable?

Come to think of it, I've read a news item recently about an interview
with the German CEO of T-Mobile (or its parent) where he said that they
were delaying 3G deployment in the US because they were waiting for some
new freqencies the Feds are about to auction off. 3G needs that for the
extra bandwidth. So how come T-Mobile is already deploying EDGE before
they got any of those new frequency licenses?

EDGE isn't 3G, is it? Is CDMA 1xRTT considered 3G?

3G will ultimately mean UMTS in the GSM world. no?

My T-Mo account is the first account on which I've ever used GSM phones, so
I'm drawing on my experience as a user of several CDMA carriers over the
past ten years. CDMA 1xRTT - Sprint PCS Vision and Verizon Wireless
NationalAccess - run at ISDN speeds and has a couple limitations, and is
considered 2.5G. EDGE is closer to CDMA 1xRTT than CDMA 1xEV in specs, as
far as I know.

Please forgive my ignorance of GSM data services.

Yes, you're right, of course. I've been hearing so much about EDGE and
so little about UMTS, that I mixed them up. I guess EDGE would be 2G, or
something like that.

I'd imagine so. Although as admitted previously, you could fit my knowledge
of GSM data on a pinhead and still have room for the entire text of the King
James version of the Bible. ;)

EDGE is not 3G and it runs in the same 200 kHz AFRC that a GSM RF channel
would use. WCDMA requires 10 (2x5) MHz per channel and three channels or 30
MHz for full deployment. This is why I predict that T-Mobile will build
their #G solution on TD-CDMA, which is much more spectrum efficient.

Steve, look at the list again. The first item is "MOST of California
(Some eastern parts are a no go)". So yes, you do have EDGE speeds in
LA.

Technically, I'm more southeast than southwest. I'm about two hours west of
the AZ state line, and almost three hours east of the coast.

:)

But when I'm ready to actually use data I will have to check into whether we
have EDGE here. Of course, I believe my v188 does only GPRS, but within a
year or so I'm getting another phone to replace it.

I'm sure there is a list somewhere. I'm equally sure that no T-Mo phones are
on it right now. :)

Figures ... So what's the point in T-Mo rolling out EDGE?

Well, Verizon EVDO phones weren't sold until they officially rolled out the
service...

They won't get decent prices from carriers until they can start buying
them in bulk. There's no need to do that until EDGE is available
across their coverage area.

Phonescoop's (www.phonescoop.com) phone finder can identify all T-mobile
phones which have EDGE capability, e.g.

Hm, according to this Web site my V330 is EDGE capable. Hard to believe
even though I'd like to. ;-)

Well, who's to say that T-Mobile just doesn't have that functionality in
their current V330s?
