| I bought a Moto V330 (the T-Mo version IS EDGE enabled) and I now get
download speeds up to 16 kps.
Quite a nice improvement, and when used with a laptop with Bluetooth,
setup is a snap!

How much was the V330? So you can have the service going through the phone &
over bluetooth to the laptop? I want to switch over since I've been subscribed
to their GPRS plan since it was rolled out, but I don't want to spend so much
money on the hardware like I did with the Aircard 750. So I'm thinking an Edge
phone would be more cost effective at the moment, but I also don't want to deal
with an extra wire so if this Edge can work over the bluetooth that'd be great.

| Since I have a contract, I had to just buy the phone. You can find
them on Ebay for around $150 or so, but make sure you buy a T-Mobile
phone, and not an "unlocked" one, as the internal software may not be
on the phone to enable it to work with T-Mo GPRS. I understand they
can send you an update, but it involves waiting on hold to get to the
wireless data CSR, a real PITA
I got a wireless data CSR on the phone, and I was advised that they
currently have two EDGE capable phones - the V330, and a Nokia (not
sure of the number). He told me they are inroducing many phones
between now the New Years, and most of them will be EDGE enabled. He
also told me that 70% of their system can now do EDGE, and eventually
it will be throttled up to around 384K
I connect my phone to my laptop using Bluetooth, and the laptop then
does a DUN connection and logs on (quick, too).
This will also work with a Bluetooth PDA, like the AXIM X50V. So with
the phone in the holster, one has internet access in the hand anyplace
(and hi speed EDGE too).
(Not sure, but Palm OS PDA did not work with their GPRS the last time
I asked).
So yes, the V330 is about three times faster than the air card, and
works over BT
IN FACT
In one building, I get a better faster connection by putting the phone
on a windowsil out in the hallway (It's a secure hallway, the phone
won't get stolen), and connect in a room that's around 30 feet away
and thru a closed door. Gets around 13kps downloads this way. Rather
awesome.

I have a T-Mo V330 I got through a Fry's Electronics store about two
months ago. I also subscribe to the T-Mo Web. Is that all that is
required for receiving EDGE? Besides the speed, how does EDGE manifest
itself, anyway? I can imagine that in a week signal area I could not
tell EDGE apart from GPRS unless there is some visual clue on the
display. BTW, Bruce, what geographic area do you live at, if you don't
mind me asking?

Thanks for the reply. I just placed an order for the V330 To Go prepaid kit from
Amazon for $160 & an internal bluetooth card for my Dell 600m. My contract
expired, but I don't think I would've qualified for more subsidized pricing
through an upgrade since my plan is only the $30/month internet plan. There is a
$50 rebate though which I hope I qualify for by activating a prepaid account. I
just won't use it & switch my current sim to the V330. 3x the speed of GPRS will
be great though. Hopefully t-mobile will continue with the same pricing as
their current unlimited GPRS service.
Two other things I was wondering about though is battery life since my laptop
can go about 6 hours with 2 batteries I wonder if the phone can keep up & does
the clamshell need to be opened for it to work?

PALM OS has no issues with the TMOBILE GPRS/ EDGE Syetm. Just has to be
configured properly. I have had Palm Vx, m500 /515 series (OS 4.x), Tungsten
T, T2 and T3's and a SONY UX50 (OS5) all on TMOBILES system using Motorola,
NOKIA and Sony Ericsson product, using both GPRS and CSD connections and
EDGE currently with my v551 and T3 and UX 50 .

There has been recent discussion that the TMOBILE rebates dealing with
TMO2GO phone purchases are a bit more involved then just buying the Phone
and selling the TMO2GO SIM on ebay (To keep folks from doing EXACTLY what
you are doing) The PrePaid acct has to be active and show useage at the 90
day period to be eligible for the rebate. I have not seen this personally,
but I suggest you read very carefully. Also, TMOBILE will no ,onger UNLOCK a
Prepaid phone until the phoine has been active for 90 days and the phone has
had 1 (one) refill applied to the acct, before they will issue the Unlock
code, once again to prevent people from doing exactly what you are doing,
whether it be with TMOBILE or to activate on other carriers. The Carriers
are wising up to the potential loss that is facing them with Prepaid
equipment being heavily discounted and are smartly taking steps to protect
themselves.

It will remain the same. It is just the nest generation of Internet
Connectivity.There has been no rumour or talk of them doing otherwise. As
Cingular does not charge more, cannot see TMOBILE even considering that.

Clamshell will not have to be open. Just sitting on the table or within 10
feet of the laptop. Ideally the phone should have it's antenna in a vertical
position for optimum signal strength, but not a requirement. As to online 6
hours , would depend on the amount of DATA being sent etc. There is alot of
variables as to whther it would make it or not. How close to a tower, the
closer proximity to the tower the less power the phone will use to
communicate. If its connected but not sending DATA is alo much less
demanding. If you were sitting there and non stop surfing and loading
images, I dont see a solid 6 hours, based on my useage of a V551, basically
same phone. If it became an issue I would just get a USB Charging/DATA Cable
off EBAY for less then $10 shipped that will help maintain the Phones
Battery and would still not be that big of a drain on the unit. Yes, almost
defeats the point of bluetooth, but if you were sitting some place for 6
hours, then it doesnt become that much more trouble, and certainly not much
extra weight to carry in your bag. Plus handy for Flex/Flashing of software
etc. Also, at the price of batteries on EBAY, getting a second battery is
certainly an alternative as well.

Thanks for the info. I read as much as I could on the prepaid kit & all I could
take from it was that you had to activate & use the phone at least once. I
wasn't planning on selling the sim & if I need to refill I'm also getting a free
$10 prepaid card from Amazon too. Not sure if I need to be concerned about
unlocking(unless they're locked to a type of service & not just a carrier) since
I don't plan to use the phone outside of T-Mobile. The phone should arrive
Monday so I'm anxious to see if this works out as I think.

| The Bluetooth dongle I use allows me to put the phone on a windowsill
and use the phone in another room with the door closed.
There is no EDGE indicator. It just works faster, but seems signal
dependant. if you can get three bars on the 330, you should get EDGE
type speeds.
I charge the phone the night before then turn it off (but I do have
the alarm set).
I turn it on at 8AM and use it on line for a good part of the day.
At 6PM I still have two bars on the battery.

Talking about batter change ... Does the phone (V330) keep the stored
info long enough for a battery change?

Well I got my V330 today & am experiencing EDGE at 115.2 Kbps(98 kbps down, 24
kbps up measured through my ISP's speedtest in Chicago). Spent a few hours
trying to get it working myself, but ended up calling tech support which gave me
the initialization commands that I was missing to activate the GPRS/EDGE
connection.

I believe the same info the tech gave me can also be found online at
http://us.t-mobile.mywds.com/
I think I passed by that site before in my attempt to configure the
connection myself, but I missed the option to select any laptop instead of
the brands they listed. Going there now with my configuration I see the same
commands the tech gave me.

Interestingly, that site does not list the V330 model but it does list
the V300.
