Is guessing from the transfer speed only way to tell?

This is with a Sony-Ericsson card, not a phone.

The speed test at dslreports typically returns values between 160 and
120, but it has gone down to the 50's.

If you use the sony ericsson software, it might tell if it's edge or not. My
gc89 does. I prefer it over the t-mobile software. (downloadable at
sonyericsson.com)
