Author replying to emails by SMS with T-Mobile no longer works!

If you use T-Mobile and want to use SMS to reply to incoming e-mails,
apparently you can't do this anymore as of yesterday.

I just was given the longest run-around of the year with T-Mobile tech
support - with no success, so I hope that others who care about it
would let them know they want it changed back to the old system as
well.

So, here's what it is about:
Let's say John sends you an email to your phone (i.e.,
<your_number>@tmomail.net
You get it as an SMS (from some cryptic address set by T-Mobile
server), and want to reply to John. You hit reply, type it, and hit
Send.
Your phone tells you that the reply has been delivered successfully.
However, as of the last 2 days, John will keep waiting for your
response, forever.

Something was clearly changed on their forwarding server - before,
those emails2SMS used to come to the phone with the From line looking
like "501", or some other 500-something integer. Now, it comes from
+1005000000 no matter what.

I called T-Mobile, spent over an hour on the phone with them, going
through an entirely cluless support, all the way to tier III, only to
be told, after an hour-plus of talking that "you just got away with
sending it this way up to now, but now it just decided to stop working.
And no, we don't have any server, your SMSs just go there". This is
from a level III guy (whose info I have), gives you an idea about the
type of conversations I had to do before getting to him.

Just to make sure: I have tried this with 3 different phone models
(different T-Mobile subscribers), with 4 different email addresses
(POP, IMAP) - all with the same result - receive the email on the phone
just like before, then hit reply, send my message, get confirmation it
was successfully delivered and the recipient never gets it.

In any case, this directly affects anyone who wants to reply to emails
that they receive as SMS on their phones - T-Mobile's suggestion
"instead of hitting reply, go ahead and create an MMS to that address"
is completely unrealistic - it is more expensive, does NOT work on all
phones, and there's absolutely no reason because they already have all
the info inside that initial SMS ready for the reply).

So, I'm not sure what the next step should be - call en masse and
complain or some other route, but this is clearly ridiculous.

Any thoughts?

I have t-mobile. It isn't just you. Occasionally something with their
sms server gets all freaky and spits out +1005000000. It almost always
gets fixed with in a day or so. This has happened a few times within the
last year. It happened within the last few days too. It's fine as of now
for me.

Hi Dan,
I can see that now it again gives out the 500-something int.
However, when I hit reply (via text message) and hit send, it never
arrives - and no longer even gives the (fake) confirmation that it was
delivered.
Is that not the case for you - can you reply to the emails you receive
normally?

It was still working for me as of late last night.
From my laptop I sent my daughter an email to
number@tmomail.net. She replied from her cell phone,
and the reply came to my laptop's email account.

Using an MDA. I can send an email to the phone. That message is
received as an MMS on the phone. Replying back as SMS does not work
(error message was address not recognized). Replying as MMS does work.

I emailed my phone from my main email account and replied with no
problems; the email arrived within about a minute. Maybe there's
some other problem.

Spam filtering, perhaps? I work for a company that offers a spam
filtering service based on SpamAssassin, and SpamAssassin seems to
like to tag messages sent from T-Mo as spam. Whitelist tmomail.net
or your phone's email address if that's the case.

My only thought is "it worked for me; check your spam filtering
and/or your email program's Junk Mail folder."

Well, it again doesn't work. Every message I'm receiving is from
+10050000000 instead of 500-something. This is 12.40AM 9.29.2006 and
been this way for about 30 min now.

Also, most of the time messages come sporadically - on average slightly
less than half of them gets through (that is, when it is working at
all, unlike now). I tested it by simply sending 10 test messages one
after another at different periods of time. 100% of them get from the
email to the phone, only about 35% of the replies get back to the
email.
Finally, regarding filtering: the email host i'm sending to is run by
me, so I know for a fact there is no SPAM filtering or anything of that
sort. And, I've tried 4 other email providers with the same result.

This is truly frustrating. I'm thinking of switching to another
carrier. Is there anyone from T-Mobile who is reading this list and can
finally fix this? And, do those of you who use Cingular, etc, ever have
this problem?

It's working fine now, sent myself something from outlook, was able to
reply back with no issue received it almost immediately
