For local calls you might consider the Aldi Talk offer. It is prepaid
and offer a good rate for short calls. If you talk longer to German
land lines, the D1 (T-MO) XtraClassic with NONSTOP is a good choice. I
believe Vodaphone offers something similar.

I cannot recommend any prepaid deals for calling the US. Buy a local
calling card either TOLL FREE, which you can use from your hotel room or
other land line phone (but not pay phone -- too costly). Or buy a card
with a local German number to use in conjunction with your mobile.

Before you left you could have purchased an ATT or MCI card for
international dialing. Or you could have signed up at enjoyprepaid.com.
They have several local German and other local (non-800) numbers in
Europe for use either with the mobile or local phone/calling card.

Best of luck.

Do you have any examples of rates for these various alternatives?

Calling 800 #s from Germany phones may or may not work. I tried to call
several toll free #s from my PREPAID D1 (German T-Mobile) phone and got
a message that the number could NOT be reached -- or something to that
effect. I have heard/read on some German sites that calling some 800
toll free numbers MAY work, but have not experienced that. If they did
work, I THINK they MIGHT be free -- UNLIKE here in states. Again, I
have no SUCCESSFUL experience in this so I am only speculating. On the
other hand, Germany also has calling cards like ATT, etc with toll free
numbers. Rather than dialing international calls DIRECTLY from the cell
phone, surely folks there are smart enough to combine the calling card
and toll free # and the cell phone.

They have several PREPAIDs where weekends to landlines are dirt cheap.
There are several with LIMITED TIME OFFERS for calls up to 2 hours to
landlines for ~ 39 euro cents.

I don't know of many US prepaids with FREE nights and weekends.

I have only little knowledge of POST PAID phones. I doubt there is much
of the free nights and weekends. In Germany you will need a German
residential address and they will run a credit check in their German
system before they will allow you to sign up for a contract phone.

I have bought all my phones USED off Ebay. If you want to travel
overseas, you will do best with a TRIBAND 900, 1800 & 1900 or quad (add
850) GSM phone. You will need a charger that accepts 240 volts and the
proper plugs for current.

Good luck,

Stan

Aldi talk is 5 euro cents / minute internal to Aldi talk phones and
possibly other E+ networked phones. Otherwise it is 15 e-cents per minute.

SIMYO and BLAU offer 16 e-cents everywhere, 24-7.

The D1 tarif XtraOne and other similar tarifs allow low weekend rates to
landlines (9 e-cents), but the other rates are HIGHER, often much higher
than the Aldi talk -- Example - D1 to other mobile phone during the day
is 79 e-cents per minute. The XtraClassic is 39 e-cents 24-7-365
everywhere; with the non-stop option then TO LANDLINES ONLY 39 e-ecents
for up to 2 hours.

As for calling card you might look at ENJOYPREPAID
(www.enjoyprepaid.com). For Germany and other W European countries they
have both local and toll free lines. Calling to states in something
like 5 cents per minute on the local lines. Of you could rely on a
local calling card in country.

Hope this helps.
