bandwidth of Blackberry e-mail?
|
|
| joel@exc.com 2006-02-09, 5:48 pm |
| Does anyone have a sense of how much bandwidth is required for viewing
summaries of e-mail on a Blackberry? I'd like to use a Blackberry when
I travel overseas, but, of course, I'll pay roaming. I also get an
enormous amount of spam. Does anyone have a sense of how much each
unviewed message will cost in terms of bandwidth?
Many thanks.

If you use the BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) you can set filters up
before going overseas to remove or reduce spam coming to your device. You
can also set your device to on download a specific amount of data per
message (i.e.: 2 Kb's) so that you don't get a lot of messages with garbage
that you don't want to read at that time. And of course be sure and add the
BB International plan on your account before you leave.

| Can I set the BB to download only the msg headers?
Is there any other overhead I should know about?
Thanks.

It's actually quite small, as it's text only. I get about 200-300
e-mails a week, close to 1200 a month, and so far my data usage has not
exceeded 4MB.
First off, if you have a spam filter, you really shoudld make use of it.
Barring that, you should set up filters to only deliver mail from
known people in your contact lists, to cut down on spam while you're
travelling.

| 4MB/month roaming works out $60/month. That's not exactly cheap.
(I do have a spam filter. It catches 2/3 of my spam, and the remaining
hundred or so messages get through.... On the other hand, I've won 714
lotteries in England, so I can probably afford the $60/month!)

Yikes!

Well, I HAVE seen in BIS that you can configure the service to send only
message headers, but setting up a filter to do so. This should greatly
cut down on the data throughput, and there should probably be a similar
setting in BES as well.

| I just found out that T-mo offers a $20/month unlimited international
BB option, so I think I'll use that and just not worry about bandwidth.

T-Mobile is still only GPRS in the USA, which is much slower than Cingular
EGPRS(EDGE). See the FAQ below for more info.

That's not correct, John. In between dropping in and dropping out of
the group to post your FAQs, you must have missed several reports that
indicate people with EDGE-enabled devices are indeed seeing faster
speeds in several T-Mobile markets.

I understand that some T-Mobile customers have reported EGPRS speeds in some
markets, but AFAIK it's not been officially rolled out and made available
across the nation, whereas Cingular EGPRS is available on the great majority
of its network, which I think makes my statement essentially correct. YMMV.

How can some T-Mobile uses be using EGPRS as you said it isn't available????

No, you're backpeddling, as always. And there is no essentially
correct. It's either factually correct or it's not. You said T-Mobile
is only GPRS, and many people here have reported EDGE speeds in
several markets.
Neither I nor anyone else here was claiming T-Mobile's EDGE was
nationwide, nor were we disputing the fact that Cingular has wider
EDGE deployment by far. But saying T-Mobile is only GPRS is just flat
out wrong, unless you've got independent confirmation from someone at
T-Mobile that there is no EDGE deployment in the U.S.
For someone to be posting FAQs in a newsgroup, they really do need to
be better versed on the industry.

That's classic Navvy. Don't expect an answer - he'll disappear again
for a long time, like he always does after posting incorrect stuff.
The only thing you'll see is a periodic posting pointing to "FAQs."

Oh dear...he just can't deal with it when someone that actually works in
the industry challenges him with CORRECT or CURRENT information.
But then, every news group has
an amateur "expert" that
follows the trade magazines closely
and gushes forth the information gleaned.
Sorry, I tried to make that rhyme....
