I am looking for some suggestions on making a final decision on selecting an
automobile GPS system. I have narrowed it down to either the Tom Tom Model
300 or the Garmin StreetPilot C330. Both seem fairly similar in terms of
price and features. I have looked at some reviews online. I do not
currently own a GPS, so it is hard for me to determine if I need certain
features or not, but I do like the following:

-plug and play operation

-built-in rechargeable battery

Hi.

Garmin have copied the TomTom with their range of StretPilots (330, etc).

THe Voice of the 330 is very "Automated" and sounds like a telephone
exchange.

I would definately reccomend going for the TT300.
No doubt, others may have a different opinion ??...............?

use, and I have dozens of celebrity voices that make it fun on a long trip.

I would agree and say the 300 is the way to go... Here's a third party
review to synch the deal:

You really need to know what you're buying BEFORE you buy it, especially
this kind of device. Like you I knew nothing except that it was a cool
gadget to have. I bought a TT300 and love it to death too. BUT, AND IT'S A
BIG BUT! ask lots of users about support.

1. How old are the maps that come with it?
2. Accuracy?
3. Who's going to fix it when it fails?
4. Are you able to get new maps etc..?
5. Can you contact the manufacturer?
Everybody acclaims the Tom Tom but no one talks about support, because
they're isn't any!
I can't get new maps and dread the day it breaks down. Support is everything
in this area.
Nevermind plug and play, instead consider break down and fix, you might be
shocked!

Works for me.

I've bought new maps on three separate occasions since I bought my TTG.
My TTG first came with USA maps. Then I bought Maps of Western Europe
from Amazon, then I bought updates for both Europe and USA from TomTom.

And I guess your problems are not connected with the facts that you also
don't know how to quote, trim and post and need to hide under anonymity.

Anonymity? So what, it's just my screen name. Unfortunately it's still not
enough to stop people like you from replying with insults. I stand by what I
said. Now you may be able to get support in the US but here in Australia
there is no support. You really should read post from many others having
problems with maps and support. I'm happy that you appear to have little
trouble in this area. I am a little confused however considering the little
time Tom Tom has been available that you were able to buy maps on three
occasions. Considering the maps are inaccurate on your initial purchase
(more than three years old) and that new maps especially for this region
are next to impossible to get, I find it hard to understand why you needed
to buy or upgrade on three occasions. I suspect you are lying or perhaps
have some other interest in the TOM TOM.
How did you purchase directly from Tom Tom, please supply details I'd like
to update/upgrade also.
I've had a power supply on order now from my retailer, four months so far
and still no light at the end of the tunnel.
You say you have support. Really, what kind?
I don't subscribe to using Amazon or Ebay and why should it be necessary to
use these anyway. Give a link direct to TomTom or phone number and I'd be
thankful. Don't critique my inability quote, trim and post, I'll try to do
better next time. If your comments were more constructive than insulting,
people posting with problems may be helped. I don't see how it helps anyone
to try putting me down about quote trim and post. It only shows you up for
what you are.
I stand by my opinions, until someone proves me incorrect (without insults)
and then I'm grateful.
TomTom is like buying a beautiful new car that works just fine only to find
later that there aren't too many gas stations.

I explained that in my last post. I repeat in more detail:

1) I bought a TomTom GO with USA maps from BUYeRETAIL.com in October 2004
2) I bought Maps of Western Europe from Amazon UK in October 2004
3) I bought upgrades to both the USA and the European maps directly from
TomTom in April 2005

Your suspicions are as worthwhile as almost everything else you post.

Go to www.tomtom.com and you will see their online shop.

As I use my TomTom is several vehicle on two continents I have had the
need to buy additional AC chargers, car mounts and external antennas both
from dealers and also directly from TomTom. I have never had a problem.

> You say you have support. Really, what kind?

Mostly by web email - go to the support link at www.tomtom.com. I also
had a need to call TomTom in the Netherlands +31 (0) 20 4 469 469 before I
bought anything when I was figuring the best strategy for getting the TTG
with both European and US maps. At that time US maps were not an
available accessory, which is why I started with a USA unit with USA maps
and then added to that the Maps of Western Europe, which were available.

It isn't NECESSARY - and your being successful in buying what you want is
not NECESSARY to me and maybe not to TomTom. It's your choice if you want
to beat your head against a wall and complain about the headache instead
of just going where the merchandise is and buying what you want.
