| I have a garmin handheld GPS and looking for a larger unit.
What Im looking for is one with the largest display and the ability to
download other maps.
It will be used for street use and to download topo's for hunting and
offroad use also.
Any suggestions???

| I'd go for a PDA (Dell Axim?) and a bluetooth receiver with a SiRFstar III
chipset. For street, TomTom, OCN, iGuidance, etc. For topos, Memory-Map is
the clear choice for serious trekkers.

the pda combination is the most flexible, multi-purpose and cost
effective solution
for off-road use you would need

| I would not recommend a PDA for hunting unless there is such a thing as
a ruggedized, waterproof PDA/GPS combo that floats (please point me to
such a product if there is). And even though I do recommend a PDA/GPS
combo for business travelers (see: my article "Which GPS do I Buy" at
http://www.travelbygps.com/articles/which_GPS.php ) I further recommend
that you get the largest screen and best audio availalbe. I've tried
to navigate with my Palm T3 and it was very scary, unsafe experience,
without having to pull over or having someone else "nag-avate." As per
my article, which I admit was writen last November, I would point you
to a Garmin Quest, which I believe is about the largest pocket sized,
autorouting unit availiable which can also change from a verticle
(hiking) to horizontal (car) orientation. And as far as maps ( I
assume you live in U.S.) Garmin should have everything you need and if
they don't you have the option to create your own maps.
I hope this helps!

| WOW... I didnt realize there was that much to these units. I guess I
should have been more specific also. The unit Im looking for will be
used exclusively in a vehicle. I will use my handhelp garmin when out in
the field. I really appreciate everyones opinion.
Thanks,

| Again, in that case, either a PDA/bluetooth solution or a dedicated car unit
like one the TomTom Go or Magellan Roadmate. Of the two, I opted for the
former so I'd have the versatility of the PDA as well. On the trail or the
road, it serves me perfectly.

If you're talking about a GO device then no, it's road navigation only. You
can do this on a PocketPC by installaing a Topo app such as Memory-Map.
