Author Tomtom: .OV2 or .DAT files?
outmarcus@gawab.com

Hello,

In TomTom Navigator 3.0 I had a single file .DAT for Points Of
Interests.
In TomTom Navigator 5.0 I have much files .OV2 for Points Of Interests.

What's the differenct between .OV2 and .DAT files in TomTom Navigator?
Is there a way to convert all my .OV2 files into a single .DAT in
TomTom Navigator 5.0?

In Version 3 and Version 5 the pre-supplied POIs are in a single .dat file.
Custom POIs you create were always stored on .ov2 files and this remains the
case.

No, and if you could TomTom wouldn't be able to use it. What would be the
point anyway?

Frankly, I'm a bit confused about all this as well, so perhaps I can answer
your question with one of my own: if the built in POIs are in the .DAT file,
and favorites are in the .CFG file, doesn't the .OV2 file represent yet a
third data file, and why can't you just get all three merged? I mean, isn't
the idea to create one database of destinations you can easily navigate to?

With TomTom, custom POIs have always been delivered in .ov2 format. There
are many thousands of POI files on the web, many converters to craete .ov2
files from other formats and the POIs are easily copied, shared and backed
up.

Favourites should only ever be used for temporary one off destinations,
there is also a 20 entry favourite limit. The built-in POIs in common with
every other system are copyright and protected hence come in a different
format to prevent access.

Don't forget that POIs are not always destinations, we have our Safety
Camera Database POI for example.

The POI.DAT file structure is known:
http://www.licour.com/gps/poi_forma...file_format.htm

On http://www.licour.com/gps/ you find perl software to create and extract
the poi file.

There is a discussion on this topic on
http://www2.flitspaal.nl/pls/flits/...s?p_id=20100388 (Dutch
only).

Frank.

OK, I must be dense then. Let's say I'm staying at a hotel that is NOT in
the list of hotels in TT's POIs. So, I'd like to add it as a POI, not just a
favorite, because I'll be returning to it. Can I? According to the manual (I
actually read it!), you can create a favorite from a POI, but not the other
way round. So, unless I am thicker than I seem, the POIs are only useful
insofar as they contain a destination you want or need, yes. If I am from
out of town, and want to stay a the local Hilton, I'm pretty much screwed if
it's not in the POIs, correct?

Yes indeed, its a simple process to create tour own custom POI Group i.e.
Family etc.

Firstly you need to create the POI Category, this creates the POI File:

1. Select 'Change Preferences'
2. Select 'Manage POI'
3. Select 'Add POI Category'
4. Enter your category name, i.e. Family and choose the icon.

You now have a new custom POI category.

To add an entry to it, in Browse Map:
1. Place cursor in location that you wish to add the POI
2. Select the third Icon from left on the bottom toolbar
3. Select Add as POI
4. Select your new POI category.

Voila!

Sounds more complicated than it is!

Hah! I knew I was missing something. Thanks for the details; it all makes
perfect sense now.

I should add that nobody (and I mean nobody) on this side of the pond seems
to have the slightest idea what to do with TT. Your site is my sole source
of *useful* info for it.
