Garmin GPS III memory Battery low, question ?
|

| Sorry if this has been posted on another newsgroup, i wasn't exactly sure
which one to use.
I have just bought a second hand Garmin GPS III (not plus). When i got it
home and switched it on i got a message saying "Memory battery low, press
Enter to acknowledge" (or words to that effect !).
So a few questions:-
1) Will this message keep bugging me when it has been on for a while ?. I'm
not too bothered if it only says it on switching it on everytime, but i
don't want to have to keep pressing the enter button every x-number of
minutes to acknowledge that the memory battery needs replacing !!
2) If i keep a good set of batteries in the unit and use it regularly and
change the batteries quickly when i need to, will i lose any info on it
(waypoints etc) ?
3) Where in the UK can i get the memory battery replaced ?, can only Garmin
do it ? and what would it cost to get it replaced ?
I did hear that the AA batteries which i put into the unit should charge the
memory battery, but up to now they haven't, which makes me think that the
unit's memory battery may well be on it's way out !, quote: "Memory Battery
Power Low - The backup battery is low. This battery is recharged by the
normal batteries. You need to put a set of new batteries in the unit and
wait 24 hours to see if this message goes away. If it does not this means
your backup battery is bad and data will be lost if you remove the main
batteries. You will need to return the unit to Garmin for a new backup
battery. "
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks
Andrew

The above is all true, so if you have to change it:
It is a rechargeable "VR1220" fitted with tags for vertical mounting.
They are difficult to find, and some people use the CR1220
non-rechargebale version. Opening the case is trivial, but you need a
decent iron and de-solder equipment to change the battery.

| Thanks Gilbert for the info. So do i take it that it will keep showing that
message every few minutes, or just at start up. If it's just at start-up
then i can live with that !
Cheers

This is a known problem with GPS III and III+. The memory batteries
were defective in a batch of the units. Call Garmin, and they will
fix it for free.
