I've just bought a Garmin Streetpilot i3 and there was no CD in the
box.

I've downloaded the manual and a software update/loader from their
website - would there have been anything else of use on the CD I didn't
get? A note on the Maplin website suggests a lot of them come without CD

Mine has a 256mb card in it - I'm in the UK. I'm not clear as to
whether the maps are held on the card or in memory within the circuits
of the thing itself but it certainly won't work if I remove the card!

The Garmin site says it is for the US market only. Does it have UK maps in
it? It sounds like it may have been modified for UK use.
