Does anyone have experience of using the fixed car fitting kit?

It says it is dealer fit only but I wonder just how difficult it is.

I have a Skoda Octavia

Are you referring to the GO? It uses ISO connectors so not too difficult to
install, it's the routing of cables, finding a suitable 12v feed etc that
the installers do best.

I have now fitted this and thought I would share my experiences in case
anyone else is interested in giving it a try.

Fitting was simplicity itself. I got my local friendly Skoda dealership to
release the radio using their special key. The actual kit fits between the
radio and 2 of the cables. You can't fit it wrong as the plugs are keyed to
fit the correct socket. You don't even have to find a power cable as it's
all picked up from the radio cables - very clever!

Routing the cable was also simple and only required the glove compartment
unit to be removed with 5 screws.

Only problem is an irritating hum on the TomTom audio when played over the
car speakers which is worse when the car lights are switched on. I can't
see its anything I have done as there is really nothing you can do wrong. I
will be contacting TomTom support for advice on this when I get time next
week as I wonder if there is something wrong with the unit. Have any other
users experienced this problem?

I have heard of other installs that suffer this. Indeed I'm told our demo
car suffers with it although as yet I don't have an answer.

Try putting a filter on the power lead.

What do you mean by the power lead? Do you mean the lead from the car
fitting box to the TomTom or the lead from the car to the box? If the
latter then the problem is identifying the actual power lead as its part of
a loom.

Do you think just wrapping the power lead to the TomTom round some ferrite
may help?

I had this reply off list so am reposting it here with my reply for the
benefit of others who may want to follow the thread.

It isnt alternator whine - it is the same if the engine is switched off.
It isnt even mains 50hz hum - its something in the TomTom electrics I think.
Its a sort of low frequency buzzing noise. I havent investigated it yet.
I want to look and see what the TomTom is sending to the car box - ie is it
low voltage and amplified in the box or does the TomTom amplify it before
sending it. Also not sure about the screening in the cable.

However it isnt too much of a problem and is really only noticeable when the
car isnt actually moving (ie no road noise)

It is so much more convenient doing away with the cigarette lead that I
think I can live with it. I will repost your message and this reply on the
group for other benefit
