Author WARNING

Hi everyone
Just to let you know I've been trying to sell my MAP76S on Amazon.co.uk and
today received a scam message which I replied to before realising the fraud.
It asked me to send the machine to Nigeria for a Xmas present and said the
would pay by BidPay agent.
DO NOT believe anything like this if you ever sell over the net. I almost
lost a perfect GPS. I would rather give it away than to have it stolen like
this.
Regards to all

Brian

Thanks, and this is a very common occurrence by some so-called "buyers" on
Ebay. Best to avoid them.

And wouldn't you verify payment *before* shipping, regardless of who the
buyer may be?

The more usual thing is that the goods are left with you, you get a cheque
payment (which clears) and you send on the surplus to some other person by your
own cheque payment which your bank, unlike their bank, honours despite the fact
that a fraud is happening.

In the case of these frauds, the payment does *clear* your local
bank who then informs you that the bank at the other end
has refused payment and requires that you pay them back.

If you want any kind of recourse, don't ship out of your
own country. Even then, no guarantees.

Ah, now that's a point worth noting. I ship to Canada, but that's it. So
far, so good.....

The story is always nearly the same - "I want to buy ....whatever... I
guarantee payment with a (fake) credit card or by instant Western Union
payment etc etc. usually with some story attached. These stupid requests
normally originate from Nigeria, Indonesia, Italy and more recently China.

Don't get me wrong I believe in international trade and I do business with
international sellers. There just seems to be a lot of scammers particularly
hacking into ebay. Always check the location of item and see if it
corresponds to the sellers location. Correspond with the seller or buyer
through the ebay email section and not through any email link on the
listing. I have been surprised several times where the seller has stated
"I'm not selling this." Consequently report these issues to ebay.

Or, of course, require payment by western union, and don't ship till
you've got the cash in hand.

But they'd not go along with that :-)
