I won a Garmin etrex Legend. What I can not figure out is how to turn off
the map so I get a track and waypoint display like my Garmin 12 (not land or
water display). Can anybody help me.

You can not turn off the basemap on the eTrex legend (it is a Legend, and
not a Legend C right? different answer for the Legend C).

A work-around is to create and upload a set of blank user-maps for areas you
want to be able to display in this way. When enabled, these blank areas
will hide the basemap detail when zoomed in to a sufficiently large scale.
