GPS recommendation?

| I have a Garmin GPS V that I use for in-car navigation. It interfaces
only via RS 232 serial, not USB. I'm looking for an inexpensive GPS
unit that will interface to my laptop via USB. Is there one? Which one
would you recommend that would work well with Mapsource installed on
the laptop..... I'd only need it to provide the "GPS location" data to
the laptop and mapsource, not do auto-navigation. (FWIW, I've tried a
USB to serial adapter between the laptop and the GPS V, and it doesn't
work, Mapsource doesn't see the unit at all)

| You must be having a problem with your USB/Serial adapter, because I'm
transferring data to my GPS V with a USB-to-serial adapter literally as I
type this. Works fine. A buddy of mine uses a USB/Serial adapter with his
GPS 3+; no problems there, either.
I wouldn't give up on your GPS V with adapter combo just yet...if it works
for others, it'll work for you, too. Are you sure you're using the right COM
port in MapSource?

No, I'm not sure. I asked Mapsource to locate the GPS device, and it
simply reported none available. Any suggestions as to how to ask it to
try different com ports, or which com port the laptop is using when I
connect the USB-Serial device?

Andy,
Could you tell me what brand/model adapter you're using? I bought the
last one they had at the local Fry's, but it looks like simply a
cable, there are no electronics to it, and no software associated with
it. So maybe it's the wrong kind of device.

In your case why bother with different cable that do not guarantee
proper hookup. Get yourself a proper usb gps for your laptop. The last
time it was on sale in Costsco at around $50 including 2005 Street &
Trip. You get a new and updated map too.

Haicom HI-204E is a great receiver. Comes with support for RS-232, USB and
kits for some PDA's. Waterproof so you can attach it on your roof. Costs
about US$50 in Norway.

I wonder if you got a package that had been opened or some other kind
of cable.
An RS-232 to USB converter needs to include active electronics and
driver software.
Sometimes the electronics are hidden inside a larger plug on the cable
and powering is normally from the USB port on the PC. In that case you
might be able to get the driver from the web - but you'd need something
to go on such as brand and/or model number.
I would recommend getting the V to work with MapSource on your laptop
rather than getting another brand of USB GPS. If you ever do want it
to do road navigation you can download Garmin's free nRoute software
that'll work in conjunction with your MapSource CitySelect and GPS V to
give spoken directions, automatic route recalculation, close-up views
of upcoming turns, etc.
I've liked it much better than competing products such as Streets &
Trips and Street Atlas.

| I have the iQUE 3600, which is a PDA based GPS which is very portable with
multiple fcns (PDA, MP3, etc...)> I bought an aftermarket USB cable that
works real well with my laptop, has a 'hotsync' button built into the cable,
and also charges the battery of the PDA!
