When people ask about maps it would help to at least know the country.
In many areas, you could use Garmin's nRoute together with their
CitySelect maps. The CitySelect maps would also be downloadable to your
LegendC and give you auto-routing plus detailed street-level maps.

| Oh, I mean a moving map on a laptop. Does anyone make a moving map for
Canada or North America that runs on a laptop and the software can talk to a
Legend C via Garmin USB Protocol (instead of NMEA).

OziExplorer will talk to a Garmin GPS via USB using Garmin protocol

As I said before, you can download Garmin's nRoute program which will
work together with their CitySelect-North America program. Hook up your
LegendC to your laptop and run nRoute to give you voice directions,
automatic re-routes, a little window with a closeup of the next turn,
etc. The nRoute download is free, but you'll have to buy the CitySelect
maps. If you prefer, it should also work with Garmin's map programs
that are specific to Canada, but make sure the maps support auto-routing
if you want that feature. I'm not very familiar with the Canada-only maps.
As a bonus you'll be able to load the maps into your LegendC for those
trips when you may not have the laptop along.[color=darkred]

OziExplorer will do this. You must have a calibrated map available which
covers the position the GPS is sending. The 1:50,000 topo maps for your area
would be suitable. I use these with a Map60 and the Garmin protocol.

| I already have MetroGuide Canada v4 which already have autoroute on the GPS.
Do you know if nRoute works with MetroGuide?

It should work fine with any map that supports auto-routing on your GPS.
I've used it with MetroGuide-USA v4.01 and it worked very well so I'd
expect the same for your MG-Canada, but I haven't tried it.
You can download nRoute at:

I'm not sure I understand your question. If you mean PC or PDA software
which can use your Legend C, then there should be plenty. The software
doesn't care what GPS provides the data stream, so anything that can
accept GPS input via USB will work. You do need to set the interface to
NMEA, not Garmin, for much of it, though.
If you mean software which you can load onto your Garmin, then there is
very little choice, just as with all other GPS receivers - you're stuck
with Garmin's offerings.

And that's the problem since the LegendC/VistaC don't output NMEA.
But since HH already has suitable Garmin maps, the nRoute approach is
free and works well.

As far as I am aware, Garmin GPSRs will only output Garmin protocol on
the USB port

Oziexplorer V 3.95.4 et seq will read garmin USB protocol when you set the
configuration correctly. Virtually any graphics file format can be displayed
by Ozi.
