Author Tom Tom Go & Speed Camera files
David Probett

Hi

I upgraded the software to 5.201 on the free download and found that
my Gatso etc files wouldn't work properly. The cameras images appear
on the screen whilst driving but try as I might I cannot persuade the
unit to revert to giving me an audible warning of my approaching Speed
Cameras.

I asked Tom Tom and (eventually ) they replied that I now have to
purchase the new maps EUR59 and then the Speed Camera
databases/software EUR79.

Is this correct or are they having a laugh?

Did the 'new and improved' 5.201 software have its functionality
altered to mess around with the previous privately acquired speed
camera files?

Advice appreciated cos I don't really want to spend EUR 138 if I don't
have to.

Perhaps I'll just drive at 25mph everywhere! LOL

Regards

David

They *would* say that, wouldn't they! They're simply trying to get you to
buy *their* camera database rather than using the free one from PocketGPS
World.

The free ones *do* work with 5.201 - but you may have fallen foul of the bug
introduced with v5.2 (I think) whereby the number of use-defined POI
categories has been reduced from 40 to 27. So if you have lots of POIs which
you have loaded, you may have too many and anything over 27 won't be
recognised.

Apparently it was a mistake, and will be corrected in 5.3 but meanwhile you
may need to get rid of some lesser-used categories to make sure it
recognises all the cameras.

If this is *not* the problem - and it may not be, if the cameras actually
appear on the screen - give us a blow by blow account of what happens when
you try to set up warning sounds for them.

Is it a mistake or a 'fix' that Tomtom have introduced in order to help
the 'common' program work on other platforms? Recommendations for
people with problems on the PDA versions of the software are to limit
the number of external Points Of Interest (POI) categories used and/or
to copy the smaller POI database from TT3 to TT5/5.1. As these seem to
have fixed the problems with TT5 for many people it may indicate that it
is the implementation of TTs POIs in the latest software is not too
clever.

It could be cheaper to just pay the fines. :-)

It was an error, the next update will re-instate the 40 rather than 29 POI
Group limitation.

Didn't TT3 support over a thousand POI categories?

No, there was a limit of 128 POI Categories but this included the built-in
ones leaving about 40 - 50 free for custom use.

The best way in my experience is to just ignore Tom Tom when it tells
you to go on the M25 and force it to recalculate the route.

(That's a hypothetical example - I haven't actually driven the route
in question!).

I think version 6 of the software - as well as giving us the updated
maps for free obviously - should have an extra voice sample which
groans in an irritated manner when you ignore an instruction.
