I've been doing research for a car GPS system. I want it to be accurate and
portable from one car to another and with a good screen for my aging eyes.
Considering a MAGELLAN ROADMATE 700, Garmin C330, and Lowrance iWay 500c. I
would like to keep the price under $700 USD. Been looking so long I'm losing
interest! Any help here?

Pick one and live with it. I know several people who swear by the RM700, but
they probably would the same for the Magellan or Lowrance. It is possible to
do too much research. My experience has been that for every advocate, there
is a detractor, and in the end it's just opinion.

With car theft on the increase again, I wouldn't choose anything that wasn't

Yes, I decided for TomTom 700. It is a bit clumsy to take along when leaving
the car, but it started immediately working without any preliminaries,
without any card play.

That's why insurance companies have riders. If I invested $700-$,1000 on an
nav system (built in or otherwise), I'd damn sure have it insured.

Get a DeLorme Earthmate GPS for less than $100 dollars and plug it into your
Laptop. This provides you with a large easly readable screen and low cost.
If you do not have a Laptop get a used one on E-bay for around $300. All you
need is a minimum 350 Ghz processor..

I second what Bill recommend.
It is affordable , foolproof , multipurpose set up with huge display .

Its also big and bulky and unless you have a transreflective screen, you
won't be able to see the display in the sunlight. Where do you set the
notebook while driving, on the passengers lap?

Buckle it up on the passenger side if there is no passenger.
With the newer type of sirf III chipset, a cf gps or usb gps attached
to your laptop do not even need an antenna . Fire up the laptop and
set up the destination. And off you go. It is the cheapest but not
the quickest set up. It is nonetheless the best setup if you already
have a laptop.

I recently purchased a car GPS system. We bought the iway 500c. Worked
great right out of the box. Took about three days using it to become
comfortable with all the menus.

What features are important to you?

I thought not being able to create routes on a PC would be a real loss, but
I find that I don't really miss it. Maybe if you do a lot of traveling with
many stops, it would become more important.

My wife and I are really glad we purchased it. I updated the software and
found they added some new features. Didn't expect that, but I am not
complaining.

<longish post warning>

Having experimented with this it is nightmarishly dangerous - but that depends
on where you drive, perhaps.

Either way, you end up looking at the footwell and realising something large
and grey is looming up ahead - *hopefully* - and then you say to yourself "I
must stop doing this, it is not smart."

I have made it work with a screen, an 8 inch connected to a windscreen mount
connected to the laptop, but TBH that's functionally no better than a PPC with
a touchscreen and that's a fully workable solution rather than something
awkward. Instead of trying to fiddle about with a touch mouse on a laptop, you
just hit the screen where you need it.

Built in car PC with a touchscreen - sure. That's probably quite good. Too
large a screen, though, and it blocks your vision. Too small and you can't see
enough detail. PPC on a decent mount manages to find the sweet spot for me,
close enough to see, small enough to see round, touch screen to simplify the
interacting with it. No extraneous casing with buttons to cut vision for no
screen detail advantage.

Don't have software that works ok yet, though.

Tom Tom has a nice display but e.g. asks far too many "are you sures" and can't
accept decent antennas, can't manage simple things like optimising a series of
drops, Destinator has hard to follow directions, bizarre address algorithms
where you can't find the road name via the search engine, but it turns out to
be there on the screen (you are in xyz street now - yes, the one I didn't know
about when you searched for it) when you find it using a paper map, etc.

The hardware isn't far off, though. My Dell screen is far inferior to the Ipaq
I used to use. The Sapphire continues to impress years after I bought it, might
be second string to the new Sirf 3 but that remains to be seen here.

I believe you are UK based. You may refer to this comparison on using
Laptop for gps use. And I can assure you it is safe and ultra cost
effective.

http://gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=137

iGuidance has a new European version at around US$150 and Tomtom has
no support for Laptop use at all.

You cannot use Autoroute of Microsoft as it does not do autoroute (?)
and gives no voice command.

The most impressive and awesome 3 d (more of an eye candy) and 2 d gps
image I saw come from my laptop at 1280x768 resolution with a little
window showing the satellite lock on info.

As I said earlier, you just have to set destination and listen mainly
to the voice command. And you only glance at the display when needed.

For a pro set up :
http://www.mobilelaptopmount.com/pic/cleanb/cleanb.htm

But you can buckle up the laptop on the passenger side. Given the new
and very sensitive sirf III , my gps can lock on just on the passenger
seat while driving.

These are extensive discussion on using outdated laptop (Pentium

Glad you are enjoying the 700 UN... Have you hooked up the Bluetooth
yet? I 'd love to hear how it works! Also glad to hear it's right out
of the box...may I ask why you are carrying it around with you? I
suggest leaving it in the glovebox.

For in-car gps system, Garmin just dropped a bombshell undercutting
even its products not to mention the other lesser players

http://www.garmin.com/products/spi5/

Suggested Retail Price:
$535.70 U.S.D.

You just have to hang on for a couple of weeks

Not water-proof though, which is a deal-killer for many.

The thread started off about in-car system. Waterproof is good. But
that is to add cost to it. Dealler's price may be lower than the SRP
of $535.70 U.S.D for domestic US market. Apparently no deal to
European.

Oh Just go with Lowrance iWay you can't loose with it. I love it! It's
so nice, the screen, mp3 player, easy to use, the price and so on... I
used to have a Garmin 2610 and iway puts it to shame now!! iWay Rocks!!

I cant speak highly enough of my iway 500! I use it in the car and on
my Suzuki Streetbike. We recently took a 1100 mile ride through the
mountains and it never missed a beat. MP3 player is a bonus and very
clear. The Find POI has saved me several times.
