switching off...grrrr
|
|
|
| Hi all....was wonder ing about a problem thats appeared on my Etrex Vista C.
for some strange reason the unit switches itself off when stationary -
extremely unuseful and very annoying. When I first switch it on it can take
upto 4 times to stay on. Anyone any ideas? Batteries are fine - 2700mAh
NimH, regulalry charged and changed.

it is a known weakness of Garmin receivers that they have poor battery
contacts. You should wipe the contact surfaces of your batteries on a tough
piece of cloth each time before inserting them.

Actually I think the problem is that the variations in battery lengths
and the narrow working range of the flat spring contacts can result in
the shorter batteries not making good contact with the spring contacts.
I have also read reports here of some people having had problems with
broken spring contacts from the pressure exerted on them by the longer
batteries.
So if you batteries pop in easily and pressing on the end of one of them
causes it to go off, that may be the problem more than dirty contacts.
One solution that I know of is to buy a Magellan, they have coil spring
contacts with a wider working range. No problem have been reported with
those.

The newer units have rubber foam inserts between the fold of the spring
steel contacts. If the cells you are using are a bit shorter than normal, you
might try adding a little more rubber to the springs (small piece of bicycle
inner tube).

I had the same problem and found it to be the electronic compass. This seems
to take a lot of power and when I stopped it waited the set time and then
turned on the compass which was enough for the unit to power off. Since
being careful and only turning the compass on when I need it its been fine.

This sounds a bit more helpful. I'll try this today.
Cheers
