GPSmap 60csx upload topo problem

Using a Mac with Virtual PC 7 MapSource works well for uploading and
downloading waypoints, tracks and routes with the supplied cable. I
bought and installed the topo maps without a problem. I successfully
downloaded 2 maps to the Unit. Since then when trying to add maps I get
the message "There was an error communicating... you may need to
restart your device."

I successfully updated the unit software using the web updater to 2.6.
Again, first time I uploaded maps it went without a hitch but all
subsequent tries have failed with the same message.

Is there a different way to "restart" the device other than turning it
on and off?

You are lucky to have it working at all. I never managed to get it
working under OS X with VPC, but it did work under OS 9 (with an older
version of VPC, I don't remember which.)

Under OS 9 I did find that things were a bit more reliable if I
unplugged the device (an SP-III) every time before I did a new upload. I
also erased the memory card before the actual upload. But in the end I
bought a cheap second hand PC to upload maps.

My thought, too. My 60Cx does not like usb on this iBook, even using OS
X programs; works fine with PC Laptop, though.

As a follow up:
I believe I've found the solution to the topo map upload problem. I was
trying to just upload 1 or 2 maps for about 400K and kept getting the
communications problem dialog and the GPS would shut down. Just on a
lark I selected several states worth of maps, about 20 MB and the
upload went without a hitch. I've tried this several times with varying
amounts of data and as long as there are several megabytes of data the
upload goes quickly and well. I currently have the 64 MB chip loaded
the about 50MB of topo maps.

So at least in my case, a GPSmap 60CSx, Mac G5 Tower with 4 gigs of
memory and Virtual PC 7.02 running Windows 2000 all work well together.
This includes updating the software in the GPS and
uploading/downloading waypoints, tracks and maps. The MapSource
software works well within Virtual PC.

Good to know, since this is an iBook. But with a PC laptop with all my
maps loaded on it (and not having VPC) I will likely stay with the PC
for map loading until the promised "full OS X compatibility" materializes ;)
